Snow White Chick Down Gene?

Thread Starter

I have been reading up on chicken genetics, and saw this gene mentioned. Apparently there is a recessive gene that produces completely white down in chicks. Does anyone know more about this? Is it really just a simple recessive gene? The question I am most interested in is: which breeds carry this gene?

Thanks!

It is not until one has lived with animals that one fully understands what it is to be human.

I just read a paper about the gene from the mid-twentieth century. It is a regular autosomal recessive gene, and the researchers said they found a barred Plymouth Rock cockerel that carried it. I wonder if any barred Rock strains still carry it?
