When can you start giving babies treats?

Thread Starter

We have our 5  10 day old pullets on Medicated chick food and I don't want to upset the apple cart as they are doing wonderful, but I am really wanting these guys to be pets and am trying to bribe them into liking us more.  wee.gif

They aren't really afraid of us,  but aren't overly friendly either.  They sit on your hand and don't fight to get away, but you do have to catch them to hold them.

So... what foods can we offer and when?  I was thinking fresh veggies and maybe some fruit in very little amounts.  What  foods should we avoid?

Another question is should we worm them soon and what should we use?

I have no idea what hatchery they came from other then I think she said Pruit??  I know we have one Araucanian and 2 black stars and probably at least one red star and a ?  which is gold and has chipmunk strips ( another red star ??? )

I am planning on ordering a few more chicks as I would like one silky and a barred rock as I love the br.  Should I get these soon so they are all closer to the same age so we have less of the " new kids on the block" problems?  jumpy.gif

Thanks in advance for any help.

You can give your chicks meal worms and greens like spinach. I give mine spinach and they love it! They'll probably be a bit spooked when you give it to them the first time, but they'll get round to pecking it and realise it's food. If you give them mealworms you should offer them some grit as well. Coarse sand like builders sand sprinkled over their food and/or offered in a bowl will do. You can also give them scrambled eggs and unsalted, cooked rice or pasta.

Avoid salty food as salt is poison for chickens. Also avocado. There is something else, but I've gone blank. Maybe another member can add the things that's fallen out of my head now. smile.png

Last time I had a mom and chicks I tossed some spinach leaves into their pen and mommy hen made a warning sound, which didn't help LOL

my baby chicks really liked plain yogurt when they were just about 2 weeks old. then I slowly started to give them chick grit too.
