Hello from Montana,
My first chicken was a gift from a neighbor. Some random little black hen only one day old that I named Hickety Picktety. She lived with my dog in the back yard for years. They got along great. My dog even gave the chicken rides on her back. We had her until we were going to move out of state, she then retired with a friend of mine where I am sure she is still happy living a good life. It has been about 8 years... but in my mind she is still there and happy. hahaha
Now that we are in Montana, my husband and I have 1 child still at home, one married and out, 2 dogs, 2 cats and 10 hens. Over the last 5 years we have had a mix of breeds, but I am fully in love with my Barred Rocks. So great. Calm and friendly. I let them out to free range a few times a week and they are so easy to herd back in...with the exception of one! I went on a 15 minute "calm" chase through dense woods. In the end, she made it back in and other than her being tired and me being all scratched up from the trees it went fine. (She still misses the door when it's time to go back home.)
Funny how such little birds provide not only great eggs, but real entertainment. They think the blue nail polish on my toes are blueberries! haha I thought it was pretty funny.... my visiting mom didn't. (The girls thought her toes were cherries!) She had to sit on her feet so they would leave her alone!
I love having my animals. They all co-habitate so well-dogs, cats and hens!!
I'm enjoying this site!! So much information!!
Thank you!!!

I heard of one chicken that lived to the grand old age of 17, so who knows your Hickety Pickety may still be hitching rides... Lovely image.
