Egg song practice; hasn't squatted yet.

My two buff Orpingtons are now five months old.   No eggs yet.   They haven't ever squatted as yet.  But, I did hear one of them singing the egg song yesterday when she was hidden under some shubbery.

I crawled in under there afterwards and hunted and searched but didn't find any eggs.   Do you think she was just practicing her egg song, or do you think that maybe, maybe, she really did lay an egg under there somewhere?

They're both very happy to jump up on my lap and sit there quietly while I pet them.  They do NOT like to be picked up though, and squawk like mad whenever I do manage to catch them.

Do all chickens develop squatting behavior or do some skip this entirely?

I always thought that I'd see squatting as a sign that egg laying would soon start.

If your hens is hiding under bushes and singing the egg song she is thinking about it. My pullets often sit in the nest boxes and watch the older hens lay (much to their annoyance!), but I must say I don't see them squat, except when the roo approaches them.

Most of my hens NEVER squat... to me or a rooster.... I suggest you keep them locked up for 3 days, where the only good place to lay is in the nesting box... you will soon find out if they are laying... also only half of my hens do the egg song... she may have *thought* she she saw a hawk lol =]
