Mink problem

We have just caught (and dispatched) a mink who had killed my pet hen 3 days ago and had come back for my pet turkeys - thankfully we heard the commotion and got there in time. Both visits were in broad daylight. It doesn't help that the river runs through our garden. Their shed and pen are totally secure but I like to let them out and about. Ivy ran off but Holly has a bandage on her foot due to Bumble foot and is not so mobile. She would be dead now if my husband hadn't gone outside at that precise time. I feel very upset at having to kill an animal. I came to your forum to see if there was any way to deter mink but it looks like that is the only solution if I want free ranging birds. I'm not sure that having lights on would be a deterrent. The mink on this river have a huge range and can be gone for a while, only to return again when it suits them.

Have lost 5 chickens and was blaming everything in my search to understand, I found a gnawed hole in the coop yesterday, I am in rural Ireland surrounded by streams and rivers, has to be a mink

Blaming mink cos surrounded by streams and rivers, and chickens dead having been healthy and laying day before and then dead drained with white eyes and exposed neck, big gnawed hole in coop

Think it's a mink as I am surrounded by rivers and there is a gnawed hole in the coop big enough for the mink, what's a trail camera
