Follow-up: Found a chicken on the highway, help!

We build a cheap cheap cheap coop out of some pallets, culled plywood, cinder blocks, chicken wire, 2x2's, and corrugated tin. What do you think?! Please let me know if there are any modifications or improvements that need to be made! I should say that we plan to add a netted ceiling onto the pen, a front onto the coop, and add two 5G buckets for nesting boxes . The front, I think, will be a single piece of plywood with an approx. 1.5' x 1.5' hole for the chickens to get in/out, and the whole thing will be hinged at the bottom so us human-folk can get in/out.

 

I didn't notice that we had an egg in the coop until I was uploading these pictures! So surprised! So excited!

Congrats! Nice set up especially considering the time and money you had to work with! Camilla is a lucky chicken. :-)

So she has a friend! Nice....and congrats on the egg. wee.gifBarring any preditor problems they should be fine for awhile...that should give you time to tweek things as you see the need for them. Much better that being on the road!

Nice job. That's a very generous run for two girls. No wonder they're giving you eggs already. Where did her friend come from?

Watch the girls. My Barred Rock, Tripp, would find a way to get over that wire wall. She's a flier. We also have hawks here that prey on small critters. What worked for me was some plastic deer fencing over top; I got it for almost free through an online ad.

Watch out for neighborhood cats. They can do quick work!

How was the egg?

 

5/12: 15 BO's, 3 WL's, 1 recalcitrant BCM Roo aka 'Boaz'. (Yes beloved Adam, my chickens may bump me off for a worm but I'd never bump you off for Buffy 'n Scruffy)  Mittens 17 1/2 y.o Tortoise-Shell Calli with "tortitude" (never too late to start loving cats). And Hanna-girl, NSDT, best dog ever, resting peacefully since 4/12. We miss you, baby-girl.  "Hooked on Chickens"... and gratitude.

I Am so glad you have chickens!! A nice looking set up for your girls. It doesn't have to be big, fancy or cost a lot of money to be a good coop. I do see a gap under the little building. You might want to plug that up with bricks, a board turned up edge-wise, to keep out snakes. Congrats!

Your chicks look great, and happy.

 

The chicken wire won't keep predators out, and there doesn't seem to be a way to close or secure them inside the coop at night.

edit to add: ah, I see in your other thread that you don't have any predators, if so they're ok. Hope so!

Wow.  amazing what one can do in such limited time and budget.  Way to go!  I'm sure you'll make your chickens very happy!
