Will a duck go broody on just one egg?

Our muscovy has laid 12 eggs so far in the nest, and just today i took out 10 eggs. I don't want the eggs under her to set, so I was thinking that I could put some pure fertile scovie eggs under her. Will she keep laying untill their is such a number eggs under her, or she will go broody with only two eggs underneath. Thanks in advance :)

My broody runners will sit just one egg, and so will my buffs

Nine beautiful Runners, four beautiful Buffs, thousands of beautiful memories and counting.

Looking for ducks?  Please consider adopting rescued ducks.  There are many places and people who do rescues, but we are not allowed to post the links due to BYC regs.  So fire up your web browsers and find some sweet, grateful duckies.

i have heard that they will lay enough for their to be a whole flock, but if you want her to go broody on just two, just stick some easter eggs or golf balls in as replacements. she won't go broody on just two, but she might on two real eggs and some fake eggs. you'll probably have to use a lot. however, she will also probably move her nest to a better hiding place if you don't replace the taken eggs with fakes.

My broody call is sitting on a rock. I have to go pick her from under her bush to put her away every night. You would think I was murdering her baby rock or something the way she carries on. roll.png

It is more instinct than a conscious realization that there is a nest of eggs. When the broody bug strikes it doesn't matter the season or the availability of eggs. They just are.

That is hilarious, never had mine brood a rock yet but I wouldn't put it past them.

Most bantam ducks are fairly broody as well as Scovies. Runner and KC's rarely go broody compared to the other breeds.

Helen: Daria, do you have to look at everything in such a negative light?

Daria: Could you possibly be referring to the harsh light of reality?

My neighbors find it quite entertaining when I go to pull her out, especially since the duck chose a thorny bush to hatch her rock under.

I bet ya'll are very amusing, finally one of my 2 girls that have been sitting on nothing for 3 weeks gave up and is acting normal again[well normal for a Muscovy] but her sister is still nutty, yesterday and today I have actually locked her out of her bedroom then I go find her in the chicken coop sitting on nothing, maybe I should go get her a rock.

I'm so glad my muscovy is so easy to break. Take away her eggs, she gives up immediately. I'm sure she is back to hiding her eggs again (can't find them), but she is out and about every day all day right now. This is the third time this year that I've found a 15 egg hidden nest and every time, just taking them away breaks her. idunno.gif
