Leghorns are great egg laying chickens. They are friendly to other Leghorns and can easily fly. The only problems is that they are bad in the pecking order and they can make a mess of the yard....

I'm really not sure what you are confused about. The dry ice issue is something the PO deals with, not really something you have to deal with. Most places are 1 day delivery but not all. I shipped birds Monday that were suppose to take 2 days though they actually only took one. Some places are just more rural then others and takes longer for Express to get there. I always ship my birds Monday - Wednesday. Never later then that during the week. I would ask the sort facility what time Express goes out. Here I need to have my Express packages to my PO before 4:30pm which is what time it is sent to the sort facility. You obviously don't want to drop birds off at 9am if the sort facility doesn't really ship them out until 6pm that night. Hope this helps.
I have just been nervous because I read COF's prior posts about not being able to ship through certain areas because of dry ice or other restrictions. I was just trying to get a list that would apply to me, but the USPS regional person here doesn't seem to think there are any issues. I have our express pickup schedule, so I shouldn't have any problems with that part of it. I guess I'll get more comfortable after I've shipped a few times. Maybe.

As far as PO's not accepting lives, its some sort facilities, and it can be different for each person depending on where they are shipping from. I cant send through St Louis or Memphis both because of dry ice shipments. This is straight from our live animal handler manager at our sort facility. Orlando happens to have a ton of dry ice shipments daily, so we have to call the sort facility directly to get the OK to send. They have a book they refer to and ask for my receiving zip code to see if it is one who is listed, if it is we cant ship there and have to get the closet location we can send to and call the customer to see if they are willing to drive (what ever the distance) to pick up the birds.
I know someone else who doesnt have air service from their location to a list of zip codes and so they cant ship any lives to them. Its a learning curve for each location to know if there are restrictions or not. I have a friend in TN and had a heck of a time sending to her, but she knows this ahead of time and we route them to a neighboring PO and she drives to pick them up.
You do need to learn your express schedule as madamwlf mentioned so you know when to have your box dropped off. For me I have to have them at my PO by 9:30 am or 4:00pm to make the express truck back to the sort hub in Orlando.
I mentioned before local PO offices dont know diddly squat on the rules/regs/restrictions of shipping. If you want the real answers chat with the sort hub manager (usually a dock manager or special cargo manager) as they know the in's and out's and can give you a heads up on how things really happen.
Thank you for the information! I will have to stop by the sort facility (it's just down the street) and try to find a manager who can help.

I know my PO has said something about certain flights they can't put live shipments on at BWI. I've not had one kicked back yet stating they can't ship somewhere.

For anyone who owes me eggs, I would like to stop receiving eggs after next week. I am going on vacation in March and don't want to leave my bird sitter with eggs to hatch! I can start taking them again 1 April! Of course if you owe me chicks, those are always excepted.
I think the only eggs I have due to me still are spring eggs anyway, just wanted to let everyone know. I am going to be driving to VA, so chicken transport can probably be arranged, I am going to be taking a couple pullets to my Aunt in VA Beach anyway! I talked her into chickens!
All I had to do was keep posting pictures on Facebook!

Well, I'm officially in the "worried over late arriving shipped chicks club"! ![]()
PO worker said that the Express shipments had already arrived for today, and my box wasn't there. He took my name and number and promised to call me if he could find them. Perhaps we can pick them up at the sort facility in Gainesville if they turn up there.... ![]()
UPDATE: Chicks arrived safe and sound this morning. Thanks to CPL for awesome chickies and packing to get these babies here safe!
