This is where Orbs training would be tested. He doubted they could succeed, Krits had taught and tested him, and Orb doubted that anything these birds had would be stronger than a powerful telepath.  He just had to make sure his light balance would not be thrown up too high.  "You know it doesn't have to be this way.  The more you threaten me the closer you draw me to take my business elsewhere.  Do you really think that you have me captive?  Show me that I can trust you and I will volunteer for your little mind probe."  He showed no fear.

"I cannot."  She started washing Chantelle's arm.  "When a mare is ordered to do something around here, she does it."

"Well I order you to stop."  Chantelle pushed the rag away.

"That means nothing here."  She persisted.

"That's enough nag."  Valdan waved at her.  He placed a hand on Chantelle's shoulder.  "Father commands your presence."  He sighed then walked away.

"I didn't catch your name last night?"  Chantelle inquired.

"Valdan."  He stopped.  He realized she wasn't moving, then he grunted and turned back to help her up. "You need to walk today, you were unconscious for weeks."

"No one told me that much."  She stiffly got up as he pulled her.

"Yeah well 'dear ole dad' isn't good with words."  He gave her a smart look then continued.  "You get to show off today."

"How is that?"  She forced herself to move.

"You'll see."  He shook his head in irritation.  "And quit talking so much, you might tick someone off."

"Do I tick you off?"  She raised a brow.

"No."  He rolled his eyes.  "Just stay quiet unless you are inside." He looked back at her shaking his head as if she were being stupid.

"There's my pretty girl."  Barabas smiled.  It looked like almost the entire branch of the tribe were there.

Valdan led her up onto a platform and she could see a massive crowd of Memeruk.  Valdan then walked back off and took a seat on the hillside behind the platform.  He wasn't really watching either.  Towards the front of the line were many massive and heavily armed Memeruk.

"Bring out the prisoners."  Barabus sneered and raised his hands.

Most of the crowd cheered, though a few stood silent.  Some of the mares looked like they wanted to run and Chantelle was starting to feel the same way.  The crowd parted and two smaller Centaur stallions were brought out. Chantelle figured they were Centaurian.  Then they brought out a single Terrellian male.  All three were heavily bound and had collars on them.

The Terrellian looked like they had beaten him to a pulp.  He looked up at her and muttered "Sutra." Then a guard yanked him to the ground.

She felt her heart leap for the poor creature and for the first time something familiar hit her when he said what he did.  She glanced back at Valdan he was still ignoring what was going on.  Barabas was to full of himself to notice his son.

"My mare is going to sing a lovely song to the prisoners before they confess their evil against us."  Barabas fingered a talisman around his neck.  He moved his finger a certain pattern then he looked at her and commanded.  "Sing to the prisoners."

She was not sure what was going on but she looked at the three bloody prisoners before her and started singing a lament.  She did not know how she knew the words but they came out nonetheless.   The guards released their grip on the three and they walked towards her as if mesmerized by some spell.  Then the Memeruk guards started laughing and jeering at them.  Chantelle stopped upon this and glared at Bababas.

"Do you confess that you murdered Memeruk mares and children in cold blood?"  He questioned the prisoners.

All three confessed at the exact same time.  "We are guilty as charged."

Barabas smiled with wicked satisfaction.  "Penalty is death!"  He waved a hand and the guards beheaded the prisoners without hesitation.

The crowd shouted and cheered.  Chantelle saw a few mares cover their eyes and cry.  She glanced back were Valdan had been and he was gone.  She felt her heart race and she wanted to scream.  This felt so wrong, but she could not figure out what to do.  It was like Barabas had control over her.  She watched the horror before her as they carried the bodies away like conquered trophys.

Barabus settled down the crowd with a gest of his hands. "No longer will we stand by and let them take our families away, no longer will we live in the shadow of the 'mighty' Centaurian."  He mocked their name. "They cast us out of our home or origin, they call us brutes and murderers, yet who's blood lies spilt on the ground?  Who came here to take back what rightfully belongs to us?   If Memeruk is in their blood then with Memeruk they belong!"  He started pacing.  "They outnumber us in both strength and firepower, they have the brotherhood behind them.  We will not let that stop us, we will grow, we will pillage, we will plunder, we will spread across Brenka to tarnish Centauria so that none will come to their aid... no they will wish their annihilation and we will reclaim our home, we will place a Memeruk on the throne and then even the Terrellain will bow!"

Chantelle kept muttering the word Sutra to herself as he spoke, it was the only cling of comfort she could find.  His words were like poison, but had the Cantaurians done what he claimed?  Was he right in his cause?  She wasn't sure what to think.  If only she could remember something.

"I never saw you as an outsider Callabine Darkrunner; I saw a very young Centaur that kept herself distanced from everyone.  Who pushed herself so hard to make Captain it wasn't even funny.  Then she refused to have a crew.  You are not lacking, do you honestly think that I would have sent my wife with you if I thought that?  Family is what you make of one, they do not have to be blood.  That house out there is more a family to me than my own father. Just make sure that you are not just running away, I hope that you do not come to regret your decision."
"There is nothing to forgive," Callabine said. "I am just trying to do something for myself for once. I will never be happy here. On Terrelis I have a chance to be happy."
Nark gave her an I don't really believe that look.  then he stood up stiffly. "Sir Illykran and I are going to have a talk... he didn't tell me about fighting a Memeruk."  He rubbed his neck.  "I miss my couch."
"I asked him not to tell anyone," Callabine said. "Besides the fact that I was foolish enough to not realize that Druin was a Memeruk, I doubt that many people would be happy to know that I killed my ex in cold blood."
"See you just did it right there, you think lowly of yourself.  You might actually be viewed as a hero... after what you did?  You did not kill Druin in cold blood, you saved the life of an invaluable centaur.  Illykran is irreplaceable... which is why Fejorn asked me to make sure he doesn't sneak off to battle."  Nark met eyes with her again. "You didn't have a papa around to look out for you and warn you if you were with a Memeruk or not. These half-bloods are good a swooning a mare.  Then their nature shows once they get what they want. Your mom asked the wrong guy to step in." He shook his head. "That's why I do need your forgiveness.  I promised Marybelle (?) that I'd help with that... to look out for you.  She worked for me for a long time and saw me as a good authority figure I guess."

The foals piped up again as Illy was coming back.  Narks attention shifted.

"You should stay here for a while.  Sounds like you need some friendly company. That and I love Ellanore's cooking.  I am staying a few days... I threw my couch out the window and sent it sailing from my office... so I have no were else to sleep. What's another Centaur in the house of Illykran"  He threw his arms up.
"Yeah, I kind of figured out on my own that Memeruks are good at charming mares. But there is no way that I would be viewed as a hero, not when - as I said before - I was foolish enough to marry him. And I did kill him in cold blood. To be perfectly honest, I enjoyed it." Callabine sighed. "I am still surprised that you allowed Vellora to go with me considering that I could have very easily killed her, guards or no guards." She stood and walked to a window, then turned to face him. Her eyes darkened slightly with anger. "Nark, why didn't you tell me the truth about Mother's death? Maybelline always valued the truth over lies, and she would not be happy if she knew that I was lied to about her death."

"Yes," Callabine hissed. "Nark. I don't need help. What I need is for people to stop lying to me and to just leave me be."
"I never lied to you, I just couldn't tell you the truth.  I did tell you not to hold things against the Terrellians but you were hell bent on it.  I also did leave you alone and you ended up marrying the wrong guy come to find out."  He crossed his arms. "I just had noticed you clammed up, you wouldn't have anything to do with anyone... so I sent someone who has a good heart that cant help but reach out in friendship to someone that's broken.  I thought you might divulge about your mother and he would be the one that could inform you about Mayballine, because he knows.  I was right,  he did tell you.  I'd be in prison if I did it.  That's all.  Now you are hugging me again and talking.  Is that so bad?"
"The circumstances that led to this conversation are very bad."

"Dah your stubborn like you mother... yes she was stubborn.. But she at least could be reasonable."  He tossed up his hands.  "I am sorry you had to find out the way you did, but now you don't have to worry about seeing any of us again, you can have your lonely place Callabine... but I have a big empty estate you are welcome to visit if you decide that you do get homesick."  He opened the ramp and walked out.

Illykran was just coming up the path.  "Hey."  He stopped and gave an understanding smile to Nark.

It sent Nark to tears.  he turned his head away a moment then he sighed and held it back. "Good to see you old friend."  They gave each other a friendly hug.  Illykran kept the foal from being squished.
