Well I got these eggs, so I don't have to use an incubator after this season. I plan on keeping a couple silkie hens to hatch my polish babies smile.png

My eggs are expected to come tuesday... I am so nervous, they are being shipped labor day weekend for some reason, so they will sit at the post office all day Sunday and Monday.  These are my first shipped eggs and it was $40 for a dozen so they better hatch.  I just keep reading all these stories of the eggs literally being thrown around.  And there has been a proven study out there that says postal men treat boxes marked fragile worse than the ones without markings. I was really looking forward to these, but the more I read, the more I have my doubts...

Everything we do as poultry breeders involves selecting for desired genes and eliminating undesired genes. That's how we got more than 200 varieties. There is a gene for everything. Or part of a gene.

Chickens and turkeys in the backyard since 1984. They co-habitate with PB pigs (5) and barn cats. Only purebreds are Welsummers, SC Rhode Island White and Royal Palm Turkeys. APA. NRA.

You would be amazed what you can trade eggs for.

No woman ever shot her husband while he was doing the dishes.

Oh yeah, I got a nap for that.

It depends on how they are packaged. The ones that I bought from you and from Washington State were all good hatching eggs. Sometimes the shipping can shake them to the extremes and it not a good hatch.

 It depends on how they are wraped  i had good hatches and some bad hatches  The worst ones are during the mad rush of x-mas. They don't care, hurry up ,don't take the time to read and Put it though Xray  that will kill most of the eggs.  I have shipped some eggs  They were happy the way i packed them the eggs can still breath

I've had horrible luck with shipped eggs. Out of probably 4 dozen eggs, I have had 3 eggs hatch. Three. One chick had leg issues at the beginning but has since recovered. Most develop but just can't seem to hatch, and eggtopsy has shown they all die around day 17-18. My local eggs, OTOH, have a 100% development and 95% hatch rate, and we have not lost a chick to weakness or other issues. I have like 20 of those running around. I even hatched local duck eggs successfully alongside the shipped and local chicken eggs (the ducks were slightly shrinkwrapped though).

The shipped eggs have all arrived in beautiful shape, no cracks. No crushed boxes, no leaking eggs. Every time I think they will be fine. But....

So....a BYCer and I have an experiment going. She sent me eggs packed in metal containers. I picked up more local eggs and set them in mixed groups to eliminate incubator issues. We shall see 21 days from now.

Is there air hole in the metal containers so the eggs can breath?
