Hello and welcome to BYC frow.gif I'd say maximum 8-9 chickens. Are you letting them free range during the day or have you got a run attached?

Welcome Richard

Chickens need about 3 to 4 square feet each, so for a 36 sq ft coop, about 8 or 9 would be optimum, just as Sumi suggested!

Hi and welcome-byc.gif from Ohio. So glad to have you aboard. Large fowl need 4 sq ft per bird, bantams 3. In your coop I personally would not go over 7 large fowl. During any cold weather spells if they have to remain indoors for any length of time, crowding can bring on many problems. It is better to give them more room than not enough. Good luck. thumbsup.gif

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan big_smile.png

4H chicken mom gave you good advice - remember you will need room for feeders, waterers and nest boxes.

Can anyone tell me, how many are too many chickens?

Hello! I'd guess 6-7 large fowl would be fine for the coop. If you have the bantam breeds (Cochin, Silkie) it would hold maybe up to ten.
