Shipped eggs with mishapen air cells.

Hello!

I recently received some shipped eggs that I ordered a while back. Out of the 13 eggs, 9 had popped or completely detached air cells. sad.png

However, the other 4's air cells are partially intact. They look very strange and move a little when I move the egg, but they aren't completely detached.

I was wondering, what's the best method to hatch these 4 (regarding letting the air cells settle)? I've heard several different ways but I really want to know the best one because we only have 4. We have an incubator we can put them in but we were originally planning on putting them under our broody silkies.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. big_smile.png

Well, first, don't get your hopes too high. Eggs with broken air cells don't do as well. However, don't throw them out. Chicks can still develop and hatch out of these eggs. This is the method I use. 1) I let them set for 24 hours at room temperature. 2) I set them air sac (large end of egg) facing up in the incubator so the egg is directly up and down. 3) wait 2-3 days 4) begin turning the eggs like normal. This has been the best method I have found, but once again, there are no guarantees. Hope you get at least some chicks out of these!!!

I completely agree with TDHenson.

I've hatched shipped eggs with crazy air cells and had them do fine. I noticed they seemed more inclined to pip at the wrong end, but they still ended up ok.

Thank you very much. Do you think it will be okay to put them under my broody?

If you have an incubator, I'd put them in there the first couple days so that they can be stored fat side up to give the air cell time to reattach.  Then, after 2-3 days, you could try putting them under your broody.

If you don't have an incubator, I guess you don't really have any choice, do you? LOL

Yes, I do.

I was just wondering if it was okay to put them under my broody after they're incubated for 2-3 days, but you answered my question. big_smile.png

Thanks!
