Did the same chicken lay these eggs???

One of our chickens started laying last Saturday (an Easter Egger that is sadly laying brown eggs...my kids were so excited for colorful eggs...) Anyway, I know the color can vary- lighter and darker, but can the eggs be THIS much lighter? Every day we get a dark brown egg, but 2 days ago we got the cream colored one, and then yesterday was dark brown again. The other thing that threw me off is that we always find the egg in the far corner of the coop, but the cream colored egg was IN the nesting box. Then the brown egg yesterday was back in the far corner. So, is it just coincidence that the one different colored egg was also in a different spot and it is actually from the same chicken? Or do you think we have 2 laying now? We've only ever gotten 1 egg a day.

Nope - those eggs are laid by different chickens. You have two layers smile.png

Congrats!!

Sorry the egg is not coloured. Do you have any other EEs?

I also think it's two separate chickens, but my husband is not convinced. Says he won't believe until we get two eggs in one day.  :)  So, we'll see what happens today.

We only have 1 EE. Our others are Production Reds and Red Stars (from what I've been told). But, I would love to get another EE or two now. They are just so cute and friendly.

Are you sure your EE laid the first eggs? Those look very much like Red Star eggs to me. The light one looks like an EE egg (pinkish). Have you witnessed her laying the egg, or just nesting?

X2 I don't think those darker brown eggs are EE eggs. EE eggs tend to be smaller and skinnier and pointier, if that makes sense. Also, Production Reds and Red Stars will 95% of the time start laying before an EE. Also, those dark brown eggs look exactly like my RSL eggs. I also agree that you have two birds laying. The lighter egg could come from any of your hens, and I would guess that all your RSL will start to lay before that EE. Don't give up hope on blue or green eggs yet!

We have a flock of 75-ish hens: Blue Copper Marans, Barred Rock, Red Sex Links, Black Sex Links, Easter Eggers, Tetra Tints, white Leghorns, dark Cornish, various colors of Rocks, some barnyard mixes, and a little Buttercup, who's just here for pretty.

Also 35 broilers plus six Easter Egger cockerels in the meat pen. But they won't be here long.

I'm sure they will be very excited to hear this!

My EE's practices laying for weeks before doing it. smile.png

RSL eggs must all be the same colour lol. Mine are that same beautiful shade. They are the biggest eggs I get. I just love RSL girls!

Though my EE's lay big eggs.

EE egg on right, Splash Amerauaucana bantam lays a very blue/green egg on the left (it's not really that green) and top is a barred rock egg. My EE's lay really big, but nothing compared to my RSL eggs!

Sometimes I have noticed a few blood streaks on someone's first egg.  Not always, but when I see it I usually think someone new is laying.

In most cases this has proven true for me as well. Probably 80% of new layers have had blood on their first eggs smile.png

Okay, so it's probably one of the Red Stars. That is great news! I just assumed it was the EE because there was one afternoon (probably the 2nd day we got an egg) where she sat in the far corner of the coop where we've found all the brown eggs for at least 1 1/2 hours. Then right after that she was squawking and talking up a storm. I had to leave right then, but when I got home about 20 minutes later, there was an egg! I guess one of the other girls could have snuck in during that time. I want to get this all figured out. It's driving me crazy! :)  Every time we try to watch or listen to them, it's like they know we're there waiting and they just freeze up, so they're definitely not making it easy on us!

Also, the eggs are all the same shape and size....super TINY....maybe half the size of our large eggs from the store. Do Red Stars typically start that small? I guess that was another reason I just assumed it was the EE....she's so much smaller than the other girls it makes sense she would lay tiny eggs.

Beautiful eggs Aoxa! We're hoping for something similar.  :)
