Where were you when the world stopped turning? Remembering 9.11.2001

I was in a motel room in Rolla, MO, starting a new job with a moving company. I was to report at 10:00 AM to get the keys to my truck. I had watched TV until I fell asleep the night before, leaving the TV on. I awoke to the sound of the anchor screaming a plane had flew into the twin towers. I watch in shock as the second plan flew into the second tower. Then the towers fell. A third plane hit the Pentagon. Then a missing fourth plane crashes in a Pennsylvania field. Where were you when the world stopped turning?

At noon today I will be at the Drew County Courthouse for the Cry Out AMERICA Prayer Gathering 2012. Many of these gatherings will happen at county courthouses across the country.

Please respond with the answer to...

Where were you when the world stopped turning ... on that September day?

The Princess and I were visiting my best friend and his wife preparing to take a train into Canada.  We were sitting in their kitchen drinking coffee when his son came running over from the greenhouses, "Turn on the TV.  They've bombed the World Trade Center."  Trip canceled - we spent the remainder of the day watching television and crying.  Left for home on the next day and were somewhat uplifted by the number of flags on display at the homes that we passed.  sad.png

I was at home. I was almost a month into what was then a new routine, that of driving my son to school (he was in kindergarten) and then coming home and eating breakfast while watching the Today show. As I sat down with my bowl of cereal, the first tower was already on fire, and the news anchors were talking, talking, talking, trying to make sense out of what made no sense at all. Then the second tower was hit, and rumors of other missing planes were reported. My infant daughter woke up, and I nursed her as the twin towers fell. As the horror I was witnessing began to take a coherent shape, I rocked my baby and sobbed, "My poor baby. What kind of a world have I brought you into, that people like that would kill you just because of where you were born?"

When I had finally collected enough information to make a tellable tale, I hunted up my husband, who was out in the yard preparing the equipment on his truck for the day. "Well, we've just joined the rest if the world," I told him. "There's been another attack on the World Trade Center, and this time they've succeeded. The twin towers are down."

I was livingin a new home with my husband (then just my boyfriend) and my 3 year old son. We were unpacking and raking the mowed grass out of the back yard so my son could play in it. My mom called me crying and said to turn on the tv any channel and she hung up. I turned on the tv to see the first tower on fire. My husband and I sat at the tv the rest of the day trying to make sense of everything we were watching and my husband got on the phone to his best friend who is military to say goodbye cause we knew the fight would be on.

I reported to work and was assigned to assist another driver load a Army Colonel's household items. It was not easy getting on Ft. Leonard wood, MO that day. We were turned down the first 3 attempts. Finally the Colonel called the gate and ordered we be allowed in. It was tough loading that truck with so many men and boys readying for war all around us.

When I went to pick my son up from school, the teacher's assistant looked me in the eye and said, "they don't know." She didn't need to elaborate. "That's wise," I replied, thinking that the parents would know their kids best, and know how to explain it so the child would better understand. I tried to tell my son what had happened, but since it wasn't something that affected him directly, he wasn't very interested, and I left it fairly brief. A couple of days later, though, he asked me, "Why are all the flags only halfway up the poles?" "Do you remember what I told you a couple of days ago, about the buildings and the planes and all of the people that were killed?" "Yeah." So then I got to explain the significance of a flag flown at half-staff. That was real to him, something he could see for himself, so it made more impact than what he had seen on TV.

Remember it as if it were yesterday. I was getting dressed to go job hunting because the company I worked for closed its doors a few weeks prior. I was sitting on the couch putting on my shoes. My MIL was here and was going to watch my 2 year old son while I was gone. My wife called from the road on her way to work saying a plane just hit one of the towers. So I popped on the tv and was watching Peter Jennings and after about 15 minutes the other plane came roaring in. At first I had thought it was a film of the first plane hitting then only to realize it was a second plane. I quickly called my wife to let her know what had happened as she works in Boston not that she worked in a office tower but to be careful just the same. Funny how time freezes, I can tell you what pants, shirt and shoes I had on.  It seems as if every generation is marred with a tragedy. While I was too young at the time to understand the Kennedy assassination and was not around during Pearl Harbor, 9-11 was going to my generations. My  2 daughters were 7 and 5 although the have some recollection of this event but without clarity at the time.

10th grade, first week of school.  Normally halls filled with chatter and laughter were quiet and somber.  I think everyone was shook up that day.
