Today I decided to put a couple of plants in the ground, started to dig the first hole and out popped this teeny cutie. So very happy I didn't get him/her with the shovel. It's a baby Black Racer. I'm going to have to catch some very small Brown Anoles for this one.

I might be crazy but there's one thing I know... you might be surprised at what you find when you go!"

Still kinda cool though :)

We have some snakes on our land. The first one I met was when I was boosting myself out of the creek bed onto the bank. Between my hands a little lower than eye level was a small snake. We looked at each other, and it wiggled it's tongue at me. I told it that it was there first and Id find a different spot to get up on the bank.

Another time when we had just moved into our house, but it was way more like camping my teenage son came in from outside with a drywall bucket. He came over to show me that he had found a beautiful snake in garage. It was trying to blend in with the extension and power cords but it had lots of color. Someone told me it was a corn snake? It was lovely, but I like them outside.

We have at least a couple that live near the patio. I like having them there, but hope they will only show themselves when snake friendly people are around.

Nope, no venom, but they are very defensive and will strike repeatedly until they get familiar with being held and some people think they're rattlesnakes because they shake their tails. It can sound like a rattle in dry leaves but it's just mimicry.

Not very likely to have been a Corn snake, they aren't usually found in the wild north of southern New Jersey. Just taking a guess, if it looked like a corn, it was probably an Eastern Milk Snake. (Google image search.) Would that be the same kind as the ones living near your patio?

I like the story of the meeting by the creek, can picture myself in that situation, getting comfortable on the hill to hang out with the snake for a little while. tongue.png
