Hello,

I have a small flock of spoiled chickens – 5 hens and a Roo. This is probably pretty silly but…. I’d like to get a few more hens to round out my egg colors J We get a green, blue, and a few shades of light/med brown. I’ve decided that I need an Olive Egger for the dark olive eggs, a Black Copper Maran for the deep choc brown color, and I haven’t decided on a white egg layer yet – I want a friendly one, I don’t really care what breed as long as she’s friendly. I’ve also been looking into the Welsummer breed for speckled eggs but it looks like those are kind of hit and miss as some will lay brown and some will lay speckled, but you won’t know until they start laying so I may need to buy an adult hen? What do you all think?

I've never had any that lay white eggs, but my silkie laid a soft off white egg that was almost pink. I liked her, but my silkie roo was a toot. Many sex-links lay a dark brick colored egg...much darker than the eggs from my RIR, SLW, and BO. I do like the dark brown eggs from my black copper marans, but they hatched from darker eggs than they lay. I love having all different colors in my egg basket, and you probably will too.

We have 6 RSL's...two are fairly dark colored, 2 are sort of medium and 2 are more cream than red. On a 6-egg day, we get two dark eggs, 2 lighter brown egg and 2 that are quite pale cream. The dark and medium eggs are often sort of speckled...they look like they have freckles; they're really quite pretty!

At long last! Got our "specklediest" egg ever today. It's the one in the left front...the freckles are slightly raised...you can feel them. Can't see it in the photo, but that big long one in the back left has what I call "sleep wrinkles" on it...from folds in the oviduct I'm sure. That's one of Blondie's...she always lays jumbo sized, light shelled eggs...no double yolkers...just big!

My Sex Link or (Red Stars) lay eggs just the same. I was wondering which breed I had that was laying the giant elongated eggs! They drive me nuts. I thought they were coming from the Black Giants - The long ones are mainly light colored.
