I have 18 chicks coming next week and I am still deciding which brooder to use. Some Bantams some not. I'm not sure how much space they will need. This will be only my second time getting chicks, the first time I only had 6 so I'm wondering........ Thank you for your help

Wow you got your hands full! You will need a big brooder box! They grow up fast! I hope you have coop ready for them. I am only guessing, 2 baby chickies for every square foot.

Go BIG! They grow so fast and this is my first time with only 5 chicks! They are 5 weeks old today and ready to moved to the coop but I haven't had the time to prepare their space. So I have had to clean their space 2 times a day. I would at least go 4'x4' but with my 11 last time I had a 3'x5' brooder box that was 3' tall and they out grew that. But they were put in the coop after they out grew that. This time I am interrogating them with an older flock so I can't just move them to the coop. Go big and good luck!

Plan ahead. How long are they going to be in the brooder? Usually around 6 weeks is average, so you need enough space for that many 6 week old chicks, not just that many tiny egg-sized chicks. I try to give a square foot each, not always possible but just like with the grown birds, more space cuts way back on problems.

I have a 3x4 foot brooder that I currently have 3 chicks in. They will be 6 weeks old in a few weeks then they will move to the grow-out pen. I will be getting 10 more in the spring. It seems adequate. My first 6 were brooded in my dogs ASPCA 28x34 dog crate.

I was at Lowes the other day, and they have HUGe pumpkin holding 6 and 8 sided boxes. BEG the garden department manager to hold one for you. I did, and I am so excited to use it for my next batch of girls. They are the perfect size for a big brooder. The sides are just high enough for them not to fly out of, but for you to bend down into. Even if you used it for two months, the cardboard is heavy duty you can put that plastic chicken netting they sell now at the hardware stores over the top. I just finally put my 10 week olds in their coop and run. I wish I had it 10 weeks ago!

Good Luck!

I have chicks hatching every week! (usually between 2-10 chicks) and I use plastic bins with shavings and paper towels on top of the shavings. I used them when I had around 50 chicks hatch at once and it was PERFECT for separating breeds plus they are really inexpensive! Then, when they can go without a light I have a 3X2 coop that has a top story and a ground story and a 4X6 chicken wire run. Good luck with your babies!

Thank you so much for the advice! I DO have a coop ready for them but I know I will be keeping them in the brooder til fully feathered. Actually the Pumpkin boxes at Lowes......I saw them and thought EXACTLY THAT! :) I think I will go by there today and like you said, beg them to save me one. I have a small brooder that I could use when they first get here I guess until I can get the BIG BOX or something larger. THANKS!!!

Oh man, you are so welcome! Funny you thought the same thing! Our lives are now looking at everything thinking all the time...."oh, my chickens would love that!" lol. Let me know if you were able to score one. The garden manager acted like I was asking for plans from the building a new wing on the Pentagon, but he did tell me his grandmother raised chickens, so I think I got llucky. He told me to not tell anyone, and here I am announcing it the world of BYC!

Good Luck!
