Pullet with SEVERELY Twisted Beak

Thread Starter

I bought a pullet today from the auction. She looked healthy enough as far as body type but I couldn't see her face very well, just enough to make out it was definitely a pullet.  I thought she was around 3-4months but after I got her home I noticed her comb is more red than I would expect a 4month olds to be.

Main thing though, I opened the box and found a beautiful girl with a completely TWISTED beak, looks awful. I think she's stunted form not eating enough and I want to know if there's ANYTHING I can do to make things easier for her.  It's obvious that her previous owner was very hands-on with her, she's super sweet and doesn't mind being picked up.

Well here's a picture so please give me any input that might help make her more comfortable.

Scissor / Crossed beak- What it is and How to Manage It

http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/03/scissor-beak-aka-crossed-beak-what-it.html

Instructions How to feed :

    • 1

Change the chicken's diet from pellets to mash or crumbles. Mash is a coarse mix of grains ground to a small size. Crumbles are smaller pellets, broken up into pieces.

    • 2

Feed the chicken from a feeder, not by scattering the food on the ground. Its beak won't close over food on a hard surface. It needs to be able to scoop it up from underneath.

I'm so sorry about your chicken, it looks quite uncomfortable.  I'm glad you took it home.

Thank you guys for the replies. I am feeding her out of a feeder so she can 'dig in' to eat. I tried some wet mash but she didn't want it and was only interested in the crumbles.I do believe it'sa pullet,it's very pullet-y in shape and feathers. I was hoping it would have been a good quality hen formy breeding project but now she is destined to hang with the layers!

I just reallyhope she thrives and the previous owners didn't send her to auction because she was starting to go downhill. I was considering trimming the upper beak but after a closer look it's twisted back up to her face so I don't think it'll help.

Dont give up hope on the breeding project yet! do your homework, I have heard that it could have been an incubation issue.... but you will have to research actual causes... I have the same pretty hen and she is just the best girl!! her name is Harley lol  Good Luck let me know how she is in a few!!

Na, a deep feeder, and she'll be fine. She's very nicely patterned, and I'd say she is just about to point of lay.

At the very least, wipe the poop off your feet before getting in the car.

Herlacing is nice & she has a decent comb besides being really short, but her tail is awfully upright for a Wyandotte. I am kinda thinking shes around POL too, just by looking at her comb/wattles. But she's about half the size of my other GLW girls =/

She is getting up on the roost herself and eating & drinking good too.

She might be a bantam GLW. They are going to be much smaller. Or, It might be that she is just stunted/runty.
