BYC...Help! We just rescued 9 Muscovy ducks and I'm not familiar with the breed at all. When we went to catch them, I thought, there's no way those tug boat bodies could fly, but they did. Right up onto the roof of the house. I was expecting to see the familiar curled tail feathers to indicate a boy vs girl, but there weren't any. Now I'm reading that the it's their size that differentiates them being either duck or drake? is that correct? These ducks I'm told are 3 possibly 4 months old and are big! Especially compared to my little Magpies and Cayugas. I'm thinking...Oh Lordy, what have I gotten myself into!

Yes it's size but look at them all and compare them to Each other not your other breeds, drakes will be long with thick legs and set wider under their bodies ducks will be built short and squatty through the body think nerf football, thinner legs set closer together where the feet almost touch when they walk. Some pics may help after you get them off the roof.

Just based on size alone, I'm thinking 5 drakes and 4 ducks. 1 Drake has full on Angel Wing and 1 of the ducks has Angel Wing on one size. The mother duck was hit on the road the day before and the woman who had them was feeding them cat food. She has 9 cats and the ducks were nesting on the front porch. Poor woman, doing the best she could. At least she was willing to let them go. Thanks again for your insight Miss Lydia.

So glad to hear you were willing to take them in, Angel wing is only looks nothing more and you can clip to make it look better and keep them from catching their wings on something. And if you have plenty of room you maybe able to keep all the drakes with out too much trouble, or are you planning on rehoming or eating some of them?
