why did you start keeping chickens

I am just wondering why everyone started with keeping chickens was it just for the eggs or meat ext.


the reason I started with chickens I always kind of wanted them for there eggs and not so much hormones and junk in the food you know better quilty but never really got off my but to do so till one day me and my neice were quid riding and stoped by some cows and joking i called one hamburger and steak and my 6 year old niece told me hamburgers and steak dont come from cows but from the store I soon relized just out of touch we have become with where our food comes from and why its so easy to wast and not respect the life that was given so we could have meat. so you may ask this is about cows how do chickens come in to play. we I live in vegas so cow is out of the ? but chicken with there eggs teaches the girls abotu the food cycle and even though i will never kill my chickens its just not who I am but it still gives the girls a little lesson on life cycle and it brough up good converstaipons abotu if we let them hatch eggs what happens to the boys ext.

A very clever man went and picked up a few boxes full of unwanted male chicks at a hatchery about 300 miles from where we live, drove around, selling them and eventually stopped at my house. He told me how someone ordered these chicks and changed their minds and he doesn't want to drive back with them and would I like to buy some..? I wasn't interested in chickens then, hardly gave them a thought, to be honest, but I felt sorry for those 100's of little fluffy things and of course I bought some...

I mean, if someone rocks up at your door with with 100's of chicks, what do you do? (Thank goodness chicks are tough...)

You raise 39 roosters and 1 hen that slipped through the net, sell and swap some of the roosters for hens, because you have the coop build, might as well use it and then you decide you need more hens, 'cause everyone wants of those nice free range eggs, so you buy another 100 chicks, end up with 57 hens and a brand new egg selling business and 5 years down the line you discover and join a chicken forum... Need I go on? LOL

What really convinced us to get them is after our cousins who live in the same town as me got 5 hens. we had thought about it before, but were never sure on the laws in our town so we kinda put it off, even after we found out the rules. Now we never have to by eggs and our hens are as nice and friendly as can be so im glad we got them.

Lol I live in a town where the mascot is a chicken - and where chickens are a part of the community and they legit run this town. They stop traffic on a regular basis. So when one of the hens decided to have chicks right behind my work building... well, then! Two came home! Two turned into four which turned into five.

Now I can't imagine a life without them! CRAZY personalities! Nothing I like better than sitting in the backyard with a cold beer, watching my weird *** chickens.

Eggs, I actually started with ducks but then on occasion wanted chicken eggs, seemed silly to go back to buying so i got some chickens instead. I only have 4 and it is staying that way, i like them though.. their more personable than i expected and definitely easy to keep in comparison to the large flock of ducks we have but i am happy with our wee flock, they offer something different to the mix.

They eat scorpions. Yep. That is the main reason I got them. But then it didnt work out, our yard was just TOO small for it to work. Then I saw a video about how chickens are kept for egg production. I really dont feel good about that. (I feel better about meat chickens actually) So, when we moved I got 3 hens. Havent had many scorpions since we got them... but that could be a fluke/ weather realated

I got chickens because most of our town has chickens, and we all get each other interested in them, and 10 minutes down the road we have a rare and unusual chicken breeder (she breeds rare and unusual chickens) and they looked so fun, it was just too hard to resist!

My sentiments EXACTLY!

I needed an outside hobby to do for myself. I planned and read through the winter so when TSC had their chick days I would be ready. I was going to order 15 of 3 different breeds, but I couldn't find a reasonably close hatchery to get 15 from, so I went to the TSC store and bought what breeds they had that day. I ended up with 15 chicks 7 of them roosters. When the roosters got to be older I got rid of 6 and kept 1. I originally didn't want any beings that they can get mean. So far the one I kept is ok. He doesn't like my Dh for some reason and my one daughter. I'm happy with what I have so far. If I get any again I'll wait til spring. I don't plan on hatching any. They are entertaining.

Eggs! We wanted "real" eggs, LOL
