Growing fodder for chickens

Now, is the "pink stuff " that anti-fungal seeds can be coated in? I don't know if I would feel safe using that for feed. Might want to hold off and just start with the BOSS. Or, if you are really itching to get started, get you a 1 lb bag of the brown lentils at your local grocery store. Soak it anywhere from 6 to 12 hours (overnight). Then spread out in your tray and rinse a couple of times a day.

Oh the site is wonderful!!!! I stumbled across this last night and only half way through. :)
Question: I have some red clover, that I rinsed all the pink stuff off. How long to soak it?
Getting some boss later in the week.

I have no idea what kind. My dh picked it up 2 springs ago and we don't remember. It all rinsed off.

Does anyone know if it's normal for wheat seed sprouts to have hairy stuff on the roots? I'm not sure if its just part of the roots or mold. It looks fine otherwise. :idunno

That's what we originally got it for. We made them a salad bar with it but it didn't grow enough from one day to the next so there wasn't enough for them to all eat for very long. The loved it and love it even more as sprouts. Looking for some other cheap grains to use now to keep this going. I have 19 eggs in the bator with baby turkeys in them. If they all hatch and live our feed bill will go through the roof in short time. Turkeys are big eaters and feeding them sprouted grain helps a lot.

Hi! I just started growing oat fodder for my chickens on 2/1 and have started about 2 lbs (3 nursery trays) every day since. They love it, but I'm getting a little overwhelmed with where to put all the drippy trays : )
Lovely oat fodder! I'm starting to see some small tails on my oats. The weather has been pretty cold, they are in my garage, so hopefully they aren't getting too cold. : )

It sounds normal. Do you have pictures?

We over-seeded our entire yard and our dormant garden plot with 25 pounds of rye grass this past November. We had the greenest yard ever and our chickens and goats were the happiest ever. They've had tender young greens all winter. South Texas does have a few advantages. It's still going strong but won't live for long cause its getting real warm already. I do grow all my veggies from seedlings every year and have an awesome greenhouse, so I'm thinking this would be a cool idea for starting sprouts to put in my brooder.
My avatar shows my son chilling in our garden about 3 weeks ago. Look how pretty it is!
