I went out to the coop this morning to find one of my hens very upset... She souls like she is crying or almost like a cow. It is the saddest thing. she makes the cow sounding noise when she exhales and then a softer one when she inhales. she is a22 week old americana.

I would seperate her asap. I am not the most in the know on chicken illness but thats always the first step.

More information might be helpful for the others that are sure to chime in. Any  discharge? When you bring her in and offer her water is she drinking at all? How is her comb. Sometimes lack of oxygen makes that blue. Is she stretching out her neck when she breathes. Like she is straining. Any resent deaths in the flock. Any changes in feed?

If it were me I would bring her inside in a box, I have probiotic powder i put in water and offer that and wait for an answer from those who know lots more.

Mother of 4, teacher of 2,  Raise chickens, ducks, geese, goats and YAY I finally have my dairy cow. I am addicted to finances and getting great deals. I enjoy sharing this with others, especially family. I actually enjoy doing taxes and have taught others to do their own.  I craft a little, sew a little, and read alot.  One upon a time people thought there was a chance I would be meek, quiet,...

There has been no sickness, death or anything unusual. They usually free range all day but i have been keeping them in more because i wanted them to start laying on the coop. I was gone all day yesterday but my husband said they had food and water. The water was dry this morning but all the other girls seem a ok. could she be getting ready to lay her first egg
do they usually fuss this much the first time? I also read something about a tick being on one before.

I wish I could help. They do make weird sounds when they are laying eggs but its pretty distinctive and not like what you described. ( at least with mine) I have only been doing this maybe 4 years now and I have seen or heard nothing like that.  I would separate and keep an eye on her. If it gets continues and it starts seeming like its an illness I would start looking at antibiotics.
