Thank you for the info. I think you may be right, and that's where I was leaning, but since this is my first winter with the girls, I wanted to make sure!

I moved to a little town near Medforsd. But I use to live in Yolo county close to the river south of West Sacramento..
We kinda switched locations smile.png

Like I said back in 80-90's down there we would get hard freezes in the valley.. Of course now that I say this, it will be the year the year it returns! We went from air conditioning about 5 days ago to close to freezing nights just instantly since with temps in 70's during the day. It seems we will be having a cooler winter.

I'm in Palo Alto and freezing isn't a problem.  On the coldest days when there's the potential to freeze, the simplest approach is just to remove the waterer in the evening and put it in your house or garage. Then put the waterer back in the morning. Hope that helps.

I remember those freezes. :)  Then again, the rest of the weather was pretty odd in the mid 80's and again the mid 90's. I remember having enough snow in our front yard when I was about five to build a snowman, and that was in Roseville at 150 feet elevation. We had some crazy freezes and floods in the 90's, too. 

I don't even think the feedstore we use has heated waterers, though.

I'm thinking we're going to have a cooler winter this year, and I think it's going to happen all of a sudden, but you guys have given me lots of good ideas, so we'll be prepared if it suddenly happens :)

2 Rhode Island Reds, 1 Black Sexlink, 1 Barred Rock, 1 Icelandic, 1 Cream Legbar, 7 new chicks of mixed breeds
We also have a Beagle, a Chihuahua, a turtle and a couple of kids

I remember snow a couple of times as a kid, but I was raised in the Winters/Dixon/Vacaville area, and I know our weather can differ quite a bit between Sac and Vacaville!
Our little feedstore in W Sac doesn't have them, but then again, they also don't have chick heaters. They do, however, have cheap feed :)

OH that's not a bad idea!! I wouldn't have thought of that! Sometimes I make things harder than they need to be :)
