Aquaponics

Gallo,

If you're still on here did you ever get your prawns into the system? How did your system do this year?

This past year was our first year of actually having water, fish and plants and our harvest was terrible. We're hoping to overwinter the fish and beds under hoop houses and still grow leafy greens. I've got probably 200 plants that have sprouted in the last week (kale, collards, spinach, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, chard and 9 random pea plants) and I'd like to get them growing enough to continue to filter the water and provide a little something to snack on for us.

I'm not around much, but occasionally an email notification to a subscribed thread gets through. I never did get prawns. Oddly enough, I had issues with the water temps staying high enough for long enough to grow them out. I'll need to set up a separate grow bed just for the upper tank where the prawns would be kept. The in-ground tank kept the water too cool.

I never had much luck with spinach or kale in the grow beds, I'm not sure why. Everything else you've listed does exceedingly well in the grow beds in winter though. I pretty much left my system on it's own over the summer and it did well despite my neglect and the heat. We're just getting into full swing for the winter crop, a bit late again this year. Sorry to hear that your harvest wasn't all that you'd hoped. Try adding Maxicrop with Iron, it works wonders and is fish safe.

I did ad Maxicrop quite a few times although probably not often enough. The one thing I'm doing that I've been told not to do is have plants in the tank with the fish. To be honest though I like having a "pretty" pond out back instead of a grey hole in the ground with fish in it. I'll add some more Maxicrop to it tonight and get better at adding it on a regular basis.

Thanks again!
