here's the new setup: shoe box with glass lid, folded wet washcloth on the side to add humidity and heat lamp above with thermometer, and 5 eggs.

well, I kind of gave up. This morning the temp was way over the thermometers highest temp like 110 or something so I cracked the eggs and they all looked just like normal eggs inside. I am thinking of waiting a few days and collecting more eggs to start over but I need to figure out how to get the temp to regulate. Any ideas? Is there another way to heat it? Regular light bulb? How important is the humidity? I'd really like to figure out how to do it in an unconventional way. Thanks guys and girls
Not sure if you're still attempting this but...I hatched with regular light bulb about 6-7 inches from the egg...maybe try raising the heat lamp higher?? Try to stabilize your temp before you put them in. I know the light/heat passing through that glass will amplify the temp too. Really cool set up though! I wanna try this when I have some fertile eggs.
will a RIR go broody? If she does can I move her and the eggs? I can't leave her on her nest because it's kind of out in the open and I'd be afraid of either my cat, one of my dogs or a wild animal taking her down. She did make a really cute nest. I'd like to replicate it in the nest box. Dirt bottom, long leaf stems swirled into a bowl and dried leaves around the outside and then she'll put one leaf on top of the egg with just enough showing so I can find it.

He is a stud. Is it weird to think if I was a hen the rooster I have would be the cats pajamas? I named him King and he is an Easter Egger but his is big second in command. My Ayam Cemanti rules five other roosters twice his size. If anyone tries to mess around he runs up to the rooster and knocks him off...and he has the respect of all 22 other chickens. If anyone has any issues he fixes it...Its really amazing to watch.
