CORNING NY
My hens , I have 11' average ages 6 to 9months, and am getting only about 2eggs a day, maybe 3 sometimes. Brand is cherry eggers, and rhode island reds., and mostly small eggs. Any idea. Getting 11 fo12 day light hours, we are rigging light soon. Any ideas or suggestions, or is this the norm for now. Live in upstate new york

Yes, without added light on a timer so they get 14 hours of light a day. I found with mine if, give them added light in the morning it works better. They get up and eat first thing after sleeping and don't get frustrated because it's still dark outside so, they don't pick on each other and seem much happier. Also the added light doesn't need to be super bright. Hope this helps.

Mine have a flood light that shines towards coops but, where they roost it's still pretty dark. You could add a 25-40 watt soft white light on a timer for earlier morning light 1 to 2 hrs and that should help but, may take a week to see much difference. EE hens are not real high producers esp. when days get shorter. RIR are normally pretty good layers but, if they have started their first light molt, eggs wil drop off. Hens first year is normally the best for production but, they may need a little help to keep them going.
I have read that not allowing them to rest during winter will shorten production years. I kept my hatchery hens going all last winter (14 hours of daylight plan) and don't plan on keeping them through another winter because they are going into first hard molt. If yours are pets, you may want allow them time off for added years.
