Lesbian Chicken???

Thread Starter

ok, so here's the deal. I ONLY have hens and  I raised her from a chick.  For over a year, she looked and acted like a hen but now she dresses like a Roo, and jumps the other hens.  I have not noticed any difference  in the eggs, no bulls eye or anything to say that I am getting fertile eggs.  Oh yeah - she doesn't crow.  So do I just have a Lesbian Hen.  I live in Hollywood, and I see many "guys" that look like guys, walk like guys, but quack like girls!  :-)  -so they are just manly woman!

Before anyone get's upset - I'm cool with everybody "just" the way they are - I just want to know if I have a Lesbian Hen is all!  This chicken is very docile and doesn't really act all tuff like a Roo either.  The plumage is beautiful, but like I said - it looked like a pullet for over a year.

Anyone have any suggestions?  I have heard stories about when there are no Roos in a flock that one may take on the characteristics - but how can the plumage change to look like a roo???

Many hens mount other hens even in the presence of a rooster. This I have read is just a dominance thing. I see that in my own flocks. It is considered normal.

Now as far as looking like a rooster too - I don't have experience with that.

You might want to look up hermaphrodite on BYC...I have heard the term but don't really know if it applies to your situation.

What you are describing sounds more like a dominance related issue. I have all female ducks and they mount each other all the time. They did this even when I had a drake around.

Well, the kittens aren't so cute anymore and the easter egger cockerels are in the freezer. Plus, I think offering them as "prizes" scared folks off! So, I'm still posting quotes, if you know it let me know. I'm very enamored of this new one, it may hang around for a while!

Sometimes roosters will act like they are gay and try to mount other roosters, too. It is just a dominance thing. A female dog will also try to mount a male dog or other female to obtain ALPHA status. It's about pecking order, not sex !  bun.gifRabbits do it to, but with them it can bring on a false pregnancy, so maybe it is sex with them ?

If the hen is getting male feathering it sounds like a ovary/hormone issue. Birds run on one ovary, usually the left. If that one goes out the other kicks in but produces too much testosterone. If this is the case she is likely to stop laying and may start crowing.

Look up "sex change in poultry" in a search engine.

Yep it's been documented before. Sometimes a hen will seem to "change sex" like MCI said. She never can fertilize eggs, but does seem to cease being a hen and start being a rooster. Some still lay eggs even. Some quit laying.

Love those Orps!

I don't care why the chicken crossed the road, as long as mine don't!
