Hawks :(

good morning.....I haven't read through the entire post, just some of the arguing. It is early and I'm still working on my 1st cup of coffee. I live in NY state and from my understanding all predator birds, all hawk species, owls, eagles, etc are protected to the extend that if you even have a feather in your possession from one of these birds it is against the law and there are stiff fines. The only people that I am aware of that are exempt from this are Native American people because of their spiritual beliefs and rituals.
Several years ago I remember a story about a woman who did art work with feathers, she had made a design and sent to the 1st lady. Not this administration, and I don't remember which, but federal agents went to her home and either arrested her or she was fined heavily for using wild bird feathers. They were not even bird of prey feathers, just wild birds which she had picked up off the ground. I have a friend also that does feather creations and she raises all of the birds for the feather work she does because of this issue.
Personally, I believe we live in this world along with the other creatures on this planet. We do our best to protect the animals we care for from the predators that live here with us. But, it happens, it is a fact that we can't escape unless we lock them up all the time. I lost a bird last week also to a hawk. I was heartbroken for her and all my girls were completely freaked out. I kept them confined in the run and coop for several days so the hawk would not come back everyday for easy pickings and make it a habit knowing there was good hunting in my back yard. They were happy to be out this weekend and I didn't see any hawks doing fly bys.
Maybe growing up a farm girl and having been married to a dairy farmer I am very aware of the reality of losses of our animals by many many means, whether illness, accident or predator, so I don't get carried away. I am sad of course and do not want any animal to suffer in any way, but the spiral of life continues. Losses are inevitable, thats all I know!
I also have never heard of getting a permit to shoot a bird of prey. And, I do know a DEC officer has rights even a police officer does not. Like coming into your home to inspect freezers and the such without a warrent. They will check dates on meat packaged in your freezer to see if your hunting permit #'s match if you are suspected of jacking.

I beg to differ with you. Usurped powers, yes. Rights, NO. This garbage makes them above the Constitution, which should never be. Shame on whomever allowed this mess to get started. Hitler would love this type regime.

Reports of police brutality are quite common. Does this mean said cops have a "right" to such behavior?

Wow, Familycomp3 is really angry. Is this common for this site to have this type of back and forth bantering? What everyone said about the hawk being protected makes sense. I do not like having them around my yard either but guess what, they have to eat too and unfortunately our chickens are easy for them. The hawk does not know that he is after someones pet all it knows is it sees food and goes in for the dive. I have been fortunate to have not lost one of my girls yet. The hawk usually comes around to the front of the green house to eat a squirrel it caught and leaves my girls alone. We have falcons here as well but the girls run it off when it is at the watering dish in the yard

and this is exactly what they look like running around trying to see where it went. I hope that familycomp3 can calm down and chill life is not all that serious. I commend you all for not calling the person an idiot as she/he assumed....sheesh

Hi hennotrooster. No, this was not that common, it does happen sometimes.

Congrats on not losing any of your girls. Nice to see that your girls chase off the falcon. Here, I've lost some to hawks, coyotes and neighbor's dogs.

No, this is extremely unusual behavior, and the mods quickly handle such situations. Thankfully!

After the migratory redtailed hawk attack that killed my little silky black chick I put everyone up in the aviary netting covered run for about 3 days. The hawk returned several times after that attack. It hung out on the gate entrance twice and a nearby fence one time. It's final attempt to get the chickens happened late on the 3rd afternoon while I was in the run with them. He swooped toward the chickens but the netting was in place and he either bounced off it or pulled up at the last minute. Anyway we haven't seen him since that time. I suppose he moved on to find easier prey.

I'm back to freeranging them again and they are doing a fine job of keeping track of what is in the sky and hanging under cover when needed.

It is funny that they will chase after the falcon because they will not protect themselves from our evil hen who is now in her own yard and not allowed in the flock. She was allowed back in last weekend but had to be taken out as she started to attack again. They have even gone after my dog who now fears them. Go figure the evil one is the smallest of the bunch and does not look at them as a meal.

Has anyone caught this video yet? It's up to debate for some claiming it's staged with a dummy toddler at first, and then a real one after camera shake with a captive Golden Eagle. Snopes has nothing on it yet, so not sure. Staged or not... it's quite frightning....

I certainly think Golden Eagles are capable of this,, as evidenced in another story that earlier in the year.

Link has a photo that may upset someone, I post it only to show that hawk/eagle attacks can be quite dangerous, not just to our chickens!

3 hawks circling this morning. Took wife and I 5 mins to make them leave. Barrage of fireworks made them think twice about being here. I missed all my shots, but the wife nailed one with a nice blue sparkle shell . Dont think ive ever seen a hawk fly that fast screeching as it went

Oh dear. That video was fake, and eagle attacks upon young humans are extremely rare. There are much worse things out there you should be worried about!
