chicken pecking my feet !!

My four hens in my original flock are still going strong. My new flock of seven 10 week old chicks just LOVE my jewelry and nail polish! If I need to catch one, I leave my jewelry on because they run to me to peck at it. They can't resist!

I'm having the same problem with this new young rooster. At first he started doing it when we would feed mealworms. Today I let was letting them out in the yard and went to get their platter I put some fruit on for them and he pecked my foot. He is very sweet and follows my granddaughter around she picks him up and pets him. He seems to like it. Other than the feet pecking he is great. I thought at first he wanted another mealworm. Which I did not give to him when he did it. Then I thought maybe a saw a fly or gnat near on my foot. He also pecks my granddaughters foot. They have a large coop and are let out twice a day for several hours. We have a very large back yard. So it can't be space. I thought maybe dominance. I just think I'll make sure to not wear flipflops when out in the yard. I have many small bruises on my feet. That way I don't respond when he does it but reward when he doesn't do it.

Hi, I have just joined this group just because of this thread.

Oh wow I can now chat with other chook lovers!

I have rescued 3 battery hens and they are the best companions. And yes the peck my feet, they peck my shoes, the peck my hubby's shoes and all our visitors shoes.

However, my brother has 6 chooks from a free range farm and his don't do it.

I started googling thinking mine might be deficient in something as the love the metal bits on our boots, but I cant find any proof of my theory.

Anyway, that is my input.

Lucy, May and Betty (the chooks) say hello,

Cheers Ted

I think if they were battery chickens that they might be getting exposed to things they've not seen before and are simply curious. Once they've gotten enough stimulation from whatever it is, they'll move on to the next thing.

Thanks Overrun,

My chooks are very curious! However they are just getting used to being picked up and being cuddled. I think in their past life being picked up was not for very nice reasons.

The most funny event this week was when they discovered slugs. It was like watching a footy match.

They are now twice as big as when I got them and their feathers have all grown back and they are looking lovely.

They have discovered that they can open the fly wire door and I often find them inside my back room.

Love from Lucy, May and Bettys Mum - Ted

This sounds stupid, even to me but, I wonder if you gave them an old shoe, similar to what you wear if it would make a difference. They could examine it and peck it and maybe get over their interest in it.

Mine figure out all kinds of ways into the backyard, even though I can walk along the chain link fence and not see a thing that looks like a full grown chicken could squeeze through it! The are quite ingenious at getting to what they want, one way or another. I had some RIR that used to wait for me to start unloading groceries, then then would fly up into the back of the open van and explore.

Does anyone know why my chicken would be pecking my feet!? Iv had her for a week now and she seems to enjoy when ever I come near her to peck me and have her chest puffed out! How do I stop this behavior ! She does understand when I tell her no but will come back and do it again!
Hello, I'm still new to BYC raising also..I inherited the 2 chickens ( partially) my son passed last year and I moved into his house with his spouse as to help each other get through , anyway I've been reading air about them one thing seems to be the fact that they don't like certain smells like mint ,or cinnamon or lavender. Maybe you could spray some lavender scented or one of the other scents on your "backyard shoes" and in the summer use a lotion with mint or lavender etc maybe they will then v avoid your feet 👣🦶👣
