Poop free, Rodent free, Shaving free simple feeder

This started out to be a rodent free feeder (had a bad mouse problem with my old feeder). After first installing it, the chickens made sure it was always full of shavings. The solution... raise it. The problem with that... they couldn't reach it. Solution... build stool all the way around it. They have no problem eating from it. The stool sits about 18" above the dirt floor (about 10" above the shavings). The rim of the feeder is about 8" above the stool. It can easily be modified to hold about 65# of feed... see my page for details on building.

Yes, that's two birds in the same nest.

Also, you have a coop cam! I want a coop cam. Would you give some specs on the camera?

The camera is a Foscam FI8918W Pan/tilt wireless IP camera
Go to http://98.197.11.59:8090 Enter "guest" under user and "password" for the password. If you are using IE, click the first log in button, all other browsers click the second button. You may be promted to enter user name and password again. Click on "live video" You must be running active X to view.
ETA... guests do not have the ability to control the camera, sorry!

This looks really cool, and I can see how it's poop and shaving free - but could you enlighten me on how it keeps out rodents? It makes sense that the height would keep them out, but you said you initially had it on the shavings...?

The feed pan is suspended far enough away from any structure for the mice to gain access to the feed. I would watch them at night with the camera run around on the stool. They knew where the food was but too far to jump in to. After a couple of months, they gave up and moved on... which really surprised me.
ETA I never had it on the shavings. It's always been suspended... just not high enough to keep the chickens from throwing shavings in it when they scratched around. I have never had a problem with mice getting in this feeder, (Lord knows they tried though) that was my old hopper style feeder. This was where it hung originally. Close enough to the floor where the girls threw shavings in it all day.

Ah, ok, got it now! I'll have to try something like that once I get my coop up. I'm thinking of doing hardware cloth along the bottom and then switching to a double layer of chicken wire. Not 100% mouse proof, but if I combine it with a lack of food for them, I might be able to get away with no problems. :)
 
A bucket suspended under a ceiling. Usually, only one chicken is in there, feeding and laying one egg. Then another one gets in it. The bucket has to be positioned well because the rats can jump quite well.
