Buying Baytril - Buyer Beware

Here's what I know about buying Baytril.

If you want brand name liquid Baytril (enrofloxacin), in a properly sealed, injectable type bottle, you're going to need a prescription from the vet, You can purchase it from places like allbirdproducts.com and and finchniche.com without a prescription, but it will look like this:

I don't believe that the bottles above have any manufacturing info on them and they certainly are not meant to be used for injections. IMNSHO, injectable anything should come from a sterile, sealed, container.

This is what you get when you buy it with a prescription:

Above is Baytril in the 22.7mg/ml strength

Above is Baytril in the 100mg/ml strength

I bought some 100mg/ml from overseas and it looks like this:

I have treated a few birds with the above bottles and have been quite happy with the results.

Hello... I have been reading posts on this forum for years but hadn't need to post anything yet cause most of my questions are answered in the posts... but I was wondering if you can give me the company that you bought your baytril overseas is because I would like to get some as well.

The baytril you get without a prescription on those web sites is NOT an injectable. It is suppose to be mixed with the birds drinking water as it says in the item description on the websites. It states that it is for Parrots not poultry. They cannot state that you can use it in poultry because then you need a prescription. I have used the parrot baytril for years and never had any issues with it. I use it as an injectable even though it says to mix with water. The bottle you got from overseas you will need a prescription for here in the states. Sometimes it is NOT GOOD to post to much info on a forum, such as the place you got that bottle from. It is actually illegal to own without the prescription and the government is always watching as is Veterinarians to find out info like this and use it to shut down those places you get the drugs from. Remember injectable baytril is a government controlled drug. It even states this on each bottle you posted even the over seas one.

Thanks for the heads up, I am well aware of the laws when it comes to prescription drugs. Not to worry, I wasn't going to post the link for the reasons you mentioned. FWIW, I'd be willing to bet money that *all* forms of Baytril, pills, injectable and oral solutions are illegal to sell and/or buy without a script. Not sure how the few places that sell it for "birds" get away with it. I guess it that's one of the reasons they stick their own label on the bottles.

Did you know that it's banned by the FDA for use in poultry? Actually, it's banned for use in all food animals.

Yes that is the main reason you need a prescript for it. It is NOT illegal if used for birds such as parrots, finches, parakeets, etc cause it is mixed with water and you do not eat those birds. Unfortunately peafowl are considered poultry because people do eat them. That is why I do purchase the parrot cause mine aren't for eating they are for looking at LOL.

So what's the difference between Baytril for cats/dogs and Baytril for birds? Becuase I know you can't give it to a cat or dog without a prescription.

They are the same. The bird baytril says 100mg per 1ml. It also says not to be used for birdsproducing meat or eggs for human consumption. It is legal because it is labeled as being mixed with water. Cat/dog baytril is either a pill or an injection.

Baytril (enrofloxacin) comes in many forms, 100mg/ml, 50mg/ml, 22.7mg/ml, several pills and I think I've even seen an oral suspension from a compounding pharmacy. Every animal is dosed differently. Cats get no more that 5mg/kg and birds get up to 20mg/kg.

It also says not to be used for birdsproducing meat or eggs for human consumption.
The Bayer bottle actually says "Federal (U.S.A.) prohibits the extra label use of this drug in food producing animals" even though there is a picture of a cow and pig on both the bottle and label.

It is legal because it is labeled as being mixed with water. Cat/dog baytril is either a pill or an injection.
So what's to stop a pet store owner from taking a bottle of Baytril 10% (100mg/ml), putting it in a bottle and slapping a label on it telling cat and dog owners to put an amount in the pet's drinking water? Because that is exactly what the bird places have done.
