Hey everyone, Just wondering, does anyone have Red Shavers? I haven't seen a thread for them yet so I guess this can be the thread for them, if anyone has them that is!

I only recently heard of them myself, and I'm still learning about them!
Red Shavers originated from Canada, they are a dual purpose bird weighing from three to five pounds, and are a very hardy breed too!
Look it up, see what you can learn. Its really interesting.

Oh and they are related to the red sex link, and I'm trying to find out how!
 
A quick web search confirms. They are a Canadian sex link.

The Red Shaver is a sex linked breed of chicken developed in Canada. Pullets are reddish-brown in colour with white underfeathers, while males are white with a few red markings on the feathers.[1] It is a hardy, dual-purpose breed laying brown eggs and dressing out between three and five pounds. They have a reputation of being a quiet breed.[2] Red Shaver chickens are used most frequently on in small flocks for small farms.

A HUGE number of people on BYC have red sex-link birds. They make great backyard birds for all the reasons mississippifarmboy looked up. My girls are extremely friendly.

Just one of the many commercial red sex links. Not a breed. Dual Purpose? From what we've experienced with RSLs and commercial RSLs in particular, that would be a stretch. Great layers. Meat? Hmmmmmmmmmmm................. Not so much.

True, not an actual breed. Yeah they dress out around 3 lbs, not 5

But if you were breeding your own sex-links (with the red roo and light hen), you could immediately separate out the boys and pen them separately and eventually feed them differently, theoretically saving money, then dress them out at 4-5 months, save the pullets for laying hens or sell to local people. And their laying ability is a little scary... my girls have given me eggs through some extremely stressful conditions, and it hasn't been good for them.
