I had a pullet come down with a swollen face, breathing just sounded loud if you put your ear next to her head. No discharge in nose or eyes. She died 3 days later because she wasn't eating or drinking,
While that one was sick, I noticed a roo was a bit puffed up, and breathing fast and heavy. Breathing sounded loud when you put your ear next to his head. No discharge, and no swollen face. He is still alive, but is getting weak, and I think food and water are not his friends anymore.
After the 1st died, another pullet was puffy, and not acting lively, so we brought her into the house too. She breathed loud if you put your head by hers. She also had no discharge, no swollen face. She has also died.
I took a fecal sample to the vet. One from the roo, and one from chickens that are next to these guys cage. I guess I brought more of a urine poop from the sick one and they said nothing was in it. (doesn't that figure) The sample that came from the next cage over, they found rouindworms, and cecal worms. The chickens that are in the pen with the sick chickens were able to reach the water, and drink out of it. even though the water is raised someone always managed to get poop in their. So they likely have worms in the pen the sick chickens came from, from drinking that water.
The sick ones are all cream legbars.I don't want to cull the rooser if I don't have to. But I also don't want a carrier to be put back in with the others. If they had some kind of discharge, that would make it easier. But with none, it leaves me uncertain. As of now no other chickens seem to be getting sick. I'm not sure if I should be treating for something or if it respiratory. Someone please help, lol.
As a side note, the vet I took the fecal samples to will not see chickens. I called another vet in the area that I know will see chickens. I asked how much to do a fecal. She said $50 dollars. I almost fell over!! I would have already been at $100 with doing two fecals. So unfortunatly I'm not rich enough to take the bird to this vet. I told my son, when he grows up, he needs to become a vet that will see chickens!!
