Getting ready to order from McMurray Hatchery for delivery on Feb 4th.  Has anyone ever ordered the assortment of brown egg layers?  My plan is to order 15 of them, 4 Road Island Reds females, 4 Araucana females (Easter Eggers),1 RR rooster and 1 Araucana rooster.  I thought I would add a couple of roosters to keep the flock balanced.  These are all Chicks so will be fun raising them and getting the dogs used to them.  What you think?

I think that is great!  I wished I could have that many birds!  Though I think you'd do fine with only 1 rooster.  I love my EE's they lay every day and it's nice to have green or blue eggs!  Good luck, let us know how your choices work out and don't forget to take pictures of your new chicks!!

Got my chicks all 25 plus 2 extra. All arrive healthy and happy from mcmurray hatchery. No problem getting them to drink and eat. They are so cute! Got 15 assorted brown egg layers plus 4 RIR females, 2 Araucana females, 2 ancona females, 1 RIR roo plus 1 free and an Araucana rooster. Haven't figured out the mystery chick yet. I did get 2 naked neck turkins they are so cute, Jim Tom is their name. Checked on them last night at 12, 3 and 5. They definatly like to sleep a lot, some sprawl out flat is that normal? Heres a few pictures

Oh they are so cute.  Yes, they like to sprawl out, I can't tell you how many times I thought my chicks were dead, my heart would stop and I would be sad, and then surprise they'd wake up and move around.  They did the same thing when they graduated from the brooder to the "big coop" one minute they were having a dust bath the next moment I swear they were dead.  I kind of felt a little stupid, but raising chickens was (and still is) new to me!  Have fun with those little chickens, do you feel like a new daddy?

Yep definatley feel like a new dad!!  I'll probably be up playing with them tonight.  From what I've read on BYC, I can feed them a few treats like scrambled eggs, spaghetti and yogart already?  Anyone agree with that or should I just waite a week or two.  They where born Friday Jan 25th at 5pm, so 4 days old know.

Chicks are 21 days old.  They grow so fast!!  All 26 had a couple hours of play time and their first time outside in the "BoneYard".  This gave me a chance to clean out the brooder.  I think the dogs are used to them already.  They just sat there and watched the chicks peck around.  Fun, Fun!!
