Are my chickens sick?? they laid a black egg!!

Look up Ayam Cemani chickens. They’re very rare and it’s possible that one of your hens carries the gene for their melanosis (I think that’s how it’s spelt). If you look at your ladies and see who has dark red, dark brown, or even black earlobes you may have your culprit! If this is so, the eggs are perfectly fine to eat and may only occur once in a blue moon, so hatch the eggs to carry on the genetic mutation! Or eat the egg and treat yourself!

Ayam Cemani eggs are not black - they are light, a shade of cream.

If the hen is fairly new to laying it could have caused her to bleed a little more when passing the egg. Or if she has had a break in her laying cycle it can cause huge eggs as well and the excess hemoglobin could cause the black look it has, then. That’s all I can’t think of.

Like you I thought when I found a mostly black egg in the nest that my neighbor was tricking me but I broke it open and it’s a regular egg just black. After Googling it I found out there are chickens that lay black eggs, I’ll have to do some more studying to find out. I’ll ask the people that I bought the chicks from, looks like I’ll b trying to sort out some chicken lineage
