Bantam Rhode Island Red Thread

Wow some very nice birds you have there. They definitly are good quality birds. You have a very nice start with them. As far as the dust bathing yes they may not know what to do. Do you have the sand in a container (cat litter pan ect) If not put it in a pan of some sort and mix some diatomaceous earth in with it. That will also help keep lice and mites off of them also. The diatomaceous earth, ( DE for short) is very fine and dusty and they would probably like that better to dust themselves with.

Good luck with them.

I do not have it in a container, just the corner of their run. I will try a container to see if they like that better. Yes, I have some DE and will mix that with sand and ash to see if they will use it. Thanks for the advice!

Got the DE and it worked! I put it out yesterday and I was shocked to see all 3 of my Reds we're in it. Yay! Now I know they like the DE so I will keep it on hand. Thanks for advice!

I'm so glad to hear they like the DE. They love the dustyness of it. Its also good for them internally. I mix a small handful of it in with my birds feed every day and it helps to keep them free of worms. I prefer to use natural products rather than chemicals.
Thanks for letting me know they liked it.

I have a question about broodiness of RIRB. As I've stated previously they are 3 years old, but I've only had them a couple of months now.

I'd LOVE to hatch some of their eggs and prefer a broody hen to do it. How likely is it for one of them to go broody? Is there any way to "help" them go broody?

We have a friend that hatched some Bantam Rhode Island Reds from Dunham Farms. She homeschools and did this for a science experiment (we agreed to take them before she started). About 5 weeks old, keeping them in a small coop and run inside our big run. Our other girls are very interested in them (2 Cuckoo Marans, a Black Australorp, and a Ameraucana). Thinking about a month before we put them together. We do have supervised visits in the big run :)
