I got this rooster like this a few weeks ago. I thought he was just molting but it seems to be still the same. Not getting any worse, and not getting any better. I have 3 other roosters as well, and I'm thinking now they are picking at him. He is so sweet, I feel just awful. I put him out in another coop with a few hens to see if that'll make it heal and I helped a few pin feathers. Please give me your input on what you'd do. Thank you!!

Hi,
I would definitely keep him separate for sure. Do you have any other crested birds? Or is he an attraction?
I would clean it with saline water, then spray with Blu-kote being careful NOT to get his eyes. Do you see any holes? Or is it surface tissue damage?
Give him a chance to grow his crest in before you put him back in general population....

My only suggestion is to remove him from the coop with the hens. Hens can be even more brutal than roos sometimes where pecking is concerned. All chickens are attracted to boo-boos, and hens will peck at a sore just as badly. I'd keep him completely separate and by himself until whatever this is...heals. It doesn't look like a molt or mites or any other 'buggies' to me, it looks like some pretty obnoxious behavior from another one of your birds...the feathers look broken off at varying lengths- like they were yanked and snapped and are bleeding out the stumps. NYRIR's suggestion of saline and blu-kote is what I would do too, but I would keep him in a single area by himself...with frequent water changes and inspections.

..it wouldn't hurt to keep some Neosporin (the formula with no pain relieving agents) applied to the area - a Q-tip would work nicely.

Please keep us updated :( Poor little guy.

Here's the picture, blown up:

I have 2 other roosters like him, they both have a full head of feathers. I saw a couple holes but they seem to be okay and not open. I think its mainly from the other roosters picking at the pin feathers, making them bleed. I will definitely doctor him up with what you suggested, thank you so much! I really just intended on having only hens for eggs, but a family member had some roosters and gave them to me. I called him today and told him i dont need all these roosters, that he can come take the other 2 and ill keep the hurt one and get him glowing again. So he'll be the only man with his ladies. :)

Ok by himself! I have another coop i can keep him in alone. I'm new at this stuff if you cant tell. I just cant stand seeing a bird like this, especially one of mine! Thank you for all the medicine advice, ill definitely do it all for him. I'll keep yall updated! Thanks so much!!!!
