It really bothers me how doctors are so quick to diagnose ADHD because they can "TREAT" it by just drugging the kid. But for things like Autism and Sensory disorders that they can't treat it is like pulling teeth to get them to even admit the kid might have a problem.
From the time my son was three weeks old on I kept saying there was something wrong with him. I brought it up at EVERY SINGLE doctors appointment. He was not developing normally and he stopped talking at a year old. I had to push and demand like crazy to get tests done and they finally did them at 21 months but the tests took a few months between the fasting before the blood for the bloodwork could be taken and then the actual testing itself which takes a month and a half for them to do.
We finally got called in to hear the results and were told that he is missing pieces of some of his chromosomes. they told us told us that this can cause loads of health and learning problems...Autism, seizures, even organ failure...but they couldn't tell us yet which of the problems he will end up having just that he might have any of an endless list of problems and there was nothing to do but treat the symptoms/problems when they show up. They then told us to get tested before we had more kids because it is a genetic thing and any more kids we had would have a chance they would have it also. Our daughter doesn't have it thankfully.
This all happened right as we found out we were pregnant again.
Right now we are waiting to find out from some specialists just exactly what we are going to be dealing with.
