Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

I have made it!! Woo Hoo! Thanks Oz, it was a wonderful read. 8000 some odd posts and it was captivating. Thank you so much for your wonderful story. Congrats on the Kiddos! And also on the tipping point of the farm. I know there will be trials along the way but such success so soon. Awesome!

Okay I have finally finished reading this whole adventure
... wow ... just ... wow... I dont know how to do any of the fancy emoticons thingies but if I could I would do the eyes popping, jaw dropping, bowing and so many more. What an amazing story so far!

Dondon is doing well. The roof is coming along. Our bedroom is now water proof!

Tomorrow they should finish the back long span and the second bedroom by Saturday evening. By Wednesday we will be ready for ceiling repair.

Welcome noob readers. I am proud you made it through.

The only thing I miss as far as food goes from Oz is a good meat pie and a half a doz menu items from a pub lunch washed down with a Tooheys New or a VB beer.

I bring some foods from the USA to the Phil's. Cheeses, some Costco steaks and Pateks curry pastes. I buy the kids Nido powdered milk from Walmart as it's half the price of here. Once a year I will bring fresh corn tortillas and make tacos. Mrs oz needs the food fixes more than me.

Over the past five years Bacolod has developed a taste for good bread and more imported foods. In manila there is a box store part owned by Costco called CNR that you can buy any Kirkland brand products.

Nine out of ten meals we eat locally grown veggies, fish from the wet market and pork from a meat shop. We obviously eat plenty of home grown chicken eggs fruits and veggie but it will be five years before we have fruits all year around.

By then the hydroponic fish pond will be running, the dairy producing and we will have home grown pig and goat meat.

How will you ever be able to leave? It is that the plan? Somehow I thought I remembered you were planning to move elsewhere after the adoptions.

Hey I got introduced to Vegemite by an Aussie when I went to Horseshoeing School in Oklahoma City. I thought it tasted like a Guinnes made into a sandwich spread. I thought it was yummy!

The tomato project has had mixed results. Changes in staff left the gardens neglected and lacked watering. The tomato plants fruited but before I got here.

Gingging gets gardening and the value of a garden. She was also impressed with the quality of the red velvet and Texas long horn okra so she is interested in seeing how other plants do.

The long term plan is to develop the farm into a fully sustainable hectare with protein from dairy eggs and the meat from goat chicken fish and pork.

I want this to occur with or without us living here full time.

Aquaculture is all around us and its an easy leap. My only stipulation is that the electricity used to run the system is collected from the sun. The main protein source for a Filipino is fish. If I can find 200 sq feet to build a tank then I might as well.

Mrs Oz is stunned by the potential of our chicken business. She also sees the potential in a full blown twenty boar AI semen supply business which is really lacking down here. These two ventures could easily grow into a full time business.

My primary goal is my family. Once we can get green cards for the kids it will be 5 years in the USA to get passports. I also want them to have Aussie passports.

Once that is achieved then we can live anywhere. If I can make 150k a year in the Philippines instead of working in hospitals for the man, then I would rather be here.

My goal with our kids is to send them to school wherever we are but ensure they meet the curriculum of the schools in all three counties.

We have very much nurtured our children's learning and try and make lessons out of every experience and activity. Toni just turned four and can do basic adding and subtracting. She can sound out words and is a month from reading.
