Do I need heat lamp in coop with the cold weather???

We live in NWI so it gets really cold here below zero is common .No heat lamps. Our chickens are fine. The coop is solid , we have ventilation and I keep it dry. I clean up my chickens daily and keep the water on a large stone so it's not on the floor.i use horse pellets which helps a lot with moisture (and odor) then I put hay on top of the pellets .The coop stays dry chickens are happy. I open the door to the pen and the chickens go out if they want to (and they do) unless it's below zero then I keep the door closed.i do use a light bulb 60 during the day and turn it off at night. And ...I still get tons of eggs. Once we had a heat lamp start a coop on fire ...Thank goodness we caught it right away ...since then no heat lamps in the coop! Besides they are correct in saying your chickens won't adapt to the cold if u keep heat on them and then ...they could freeze. I hope this helps .

My birds are 95% feathered ( a few months old) they come inside at night and go out during the day.. Except it is chilly today 40-50 is that too cold to be out?

Chickens love it when the temperature is about 40-50. They hate hot weather the most. Much above 70 and they are stressing. If your birds are a few months old they are fine to let out this time of the year. Remember they are carrying around a nice warm down coat.

I have one very small Bantam hen. She is alone. The reason she's alone is a very long story, and she is happy by herself. Anyhow, my question is: since she is by herself with no other chickens for warmth, should I put heat in her coop this winter? Her coop is veey small and I keep javing peoplw twll me to put a 25 watt bulb in there just to help keep her warm. Good idea for one lone tiny chicken?

Ok, I have a question, I have 7 chickens (variety) and 1 pot belly pig in a 8x10 fancy chicken coop, the pig needs heat but the chickens don't, so should I or should I not put a heating lamp in my coop ? I live in Indiana and it's supposed to get down to 12 tonight. The co-op is not insulated.
