Barred rock hen or rooster

So would it be wrong when looking to buy a young rooster, to look into the history of how the rooster's father looks and acts if still alive ? Or grandfather, and past memebers of his line that the breeder used to get a general sense on what kind of rooster you might be buying ? And if the breeder or farmer has every had to put down any roosters of that line for aggressiveness ? As well as for looking for health defects if you are going to breed the rooster.

I would look for someone who knows that an aggressive rooster should be culled. Most good breeders do cull for temperament.

Even if the dad is nice, not all kids will be.
I think the way you raise them has just as much of a chance of creating an aggressive rooster than one bred from one.

Remember all young boys go through a stage.

It wouldn't be wrong to try and see the breeding stock, but most farms will not allow you near them due to biosecurity. If they do, seems off to me. So many diseases can be passed from visitors to their stock and some are detrimental to a flock's health.

I had a mean BR rooster. He had a son. The son is also mean as can be - maybe meaner.

Ok I'm really starting to worry about my Barred Rock roster, I'm going to go out one morning and he will have turned into a Rottweiler!!!

All 3 of mine are dolls.

Any rooster has the ability to be mean as sin. Easter Eggers are notoriously mean. Not mine.

Yep. I actually went for a BR as my first rooster because I read so much about them being sweet. I guess mine just came from a breeder who cared more about looks than temperament.

Is that a columbian rock or wyandotte in your picture? If a wyandotte or rock where did it come from?

In that picture there's a Plymouth barred rock roster and hen along with a light sussex hen.

yes so would I!!!!!!! He is gorgeous!!!

Thank you. He's really friendly and follows me around the garden but he hasn't started crowing yet. I thinks he's around 24weekd old now and haven't heard him make much noise at all.
