Right! I'm heading for the Pulitzer for research on chicken egg laying factors, specifically the effect ambient temperature has on the process. There IS a Pulitzer for that, right? wink.png

 

7 today, 2 eggs between 9 and 12:30, 5 more by 4:15. The temps were dropping all day: 44 F at 9 AM, 36 F at 4:15. I'm SURE it is all about the temp and has NOTHING to do with what time of day they laid yesterday big_smile.png. The only one to not repeat today was the Ancona. After being pretty reliable, the Anconas have dropped to an egg every 4 to 8 th.gifdays. Both BAs have laid almost every day the last 12 days.

I don't think the BAs and EEs can keep carrying the load for the other breeds. A girl can only do SO much!

Went home for lunch and we have received about an inch of snow.  The chickies wanted nothing to do with it and were all inside the coop.  I had to step over fluffy littly bodies to get to the nests.  I retrieved 4 eggs but expect a few more as one girl was sitting so I left her until this afternoon.  I think our hi today is to be around 37.

Wife to a patient husband, mother to 2 great kids, 1 hunting cat, ? gold fish (they had babies and we can't keep count), 7 4-H sex-links,3 Salmon Favorelles, 1 Mottled Houdans, 1 Cochin bantams,1 Araucana and 2 Llamas.

3 eggs on Tuesday, temps mid to high 30s, low 30's Wednesday and I got 5. 

 

Started just above freezing this morning and has dropped to 21F. Supposed to be -12F overnight with a high of 13F tomorrow!

 

Zorra has now laid 12 days in a row. What a gal big_smile.png Both EEs took a well deserved day off.

I know, it's gonna be yucky lol. But it's not going to be too bad because our run is enclosed and we put wood-framed plastic panels up on the sides to keep the snow/wind out on all sides but one for the winter, so the run is staying dry for the most part. Except for the part that got compacted by the heavy rains we got before we put the plastic panels up, I've been able to scoop most of the poop out in the run, but for the last few days it's been frozen to the poop boards inside the coop in some spots, those are the spots that I'm going to have to chisel out sickbyc.gif .

Here's a pic of our coop/run with the plastic panels. They are held on with hourglass shaped latches, so they are easily removeable in the spring.

That's my question how many chickens does this coop hold? I have one ordered that's similar to this one.

I think it's interesting too. Pulitzer or not big_smile.png I only notice a big drop in egg production when the temps drop below 0 F. The first few days the temps are low the production drops drastically then picks up some but stays low as long as the temps are low. Once the temps moderate above 0 egg production picks up again. Then again when temps are above a hot 100 F egg production drops off unless chickens are kept cool somehow.

We have been having nice days with highs @ 32F and getting @ 3 doz. eggs a day. I have 2 dozen at noon today. We have @ 60 chickens with some molting and some to young to lay. It is supposed to get cold this weekend so we shall see what it does to our egg production.

I'm using one of those growing lamps for plants in my coop. They are laying extremely well considering it's winters. Both my bantams and standards. The fancier breeds don't lay as well in winter but still get a good amount. I get about 12-16 a day in winter with 30 hens I'd say.

The day started out just below freezing. Dropped to 7F by 7 PM. supposed to get cold over night.

 

5 eggs again today. One Faverolles, both EEs and both Black Australorps. I'm starting to wonder why I feed any of the girls except the EEs and BAs; lazy butt chickens! This is the 13th egg in a many days from the bigger BA and it was 82 grams! Her usual is about 62 grams and she only started laying 15 days ago.
