Jersey Giant Hatching Question-Day 24--Lesson Learned

One thing you might want to try is getting a small mag-light. The one that is about 5 inches long and takes 2 AA batteries. When candling anything dark make sure you put in fresh batteries. With the mag lights you can turn the light so that you have an intense spotlight. Then you will have to shove him in a closet and close the door so it is absolutely dark!!! Find the airsac and then position the light so that it is on the side of the egg pointing up towards the airsac. If you angle it right you should be able to see the larger veins buy the egg shell. I hope this makes sense and you can know sooner if they are growing. This is the only way I can tell on darker eggs and sometimes they are still to dark. Good luck next time. Jenn

Thanks, Jen. Actually, he uses an LED flashlight which is much more powerful, but the light is cool. It's a brand new Leatherman LED flashlight that is so bright that you can't even look at it. I found it in the Costco and it had a button to push to demo it and I saw spots for two days...
He turns off all of the lights and holds the egg as you described because he studied the internet and the photos and techniques for days before candling the first time.

I think that he needs more experience with it, I suppose. I don't know. He did so much better with the white shelled eggs. I just ordered some Jersey Giant pullets from Xtreme Gamebirds. I don't have to hatch those. We'll see how that works out. Hopefully and fox and raccoon won't have a Jersey Giant feast now. We'll be working on the predator proofing tomorrow...again..and again..and again.

Thanks so much for your advice. It's great to know that he's at least TRYING to do it properly!! Check out that Leatherman. You might love it!

The only way to get better is to try and try!! I will look for the leatherman flashlight!! My hubby goes no where without his leatherman on his hip!! Jenn

Jenn:

The Leatherman is about the same size as the mag light you were describing...just brigher and not as hot. I bought it in Costco for a lot less than the mag lights. Just don't look at its beam! LOL.

My husband is the same way about carrying his regular Leatherman. I have the flashlight in the dining room with the incubators. I bought it for him, but the chickens/ducks/geese have taken it over now.

Again, thanks for the words of encouragement.

Nancy

I think I am getting older babies, not day olds, but I am not sure. I just want some!!! Soon, I hope. The eggs must have been scrambed in the mail!

Hi , I have a question on incubator temp. before I put the eggs in my new incubator I am running it a week to monitor it. temp is at 37.5 and keeping humidity at 60% I am going to hatch Jersey Giants from my own flock and have both Blacks and Blues in different pens. So hoping for some splash. Some suggest 39.5 as set temp. Any comments even as I am in Canada Nova Scotia is the same temperature as say New Hampshire or Bridge Hampton NY Thanks Kim
