Raising ducks like children - please don't

Yes - raise them like part of the family - but do not raise them like they are babies or children. Raise them as much loved pets - give them the care and attention they need and allow them to behave naturally.

Most time when people baby an animal, dress it up, carry it about - the animal grows up too dependant on that person and the persons will eventually tire of the pet - maybe they have to move, get married, etc, and then the poor animal is left behind - and its so difficult to re home or put it with animals of its own kind - then its doomed to a miserable life and probably (with the case of dogs) put to sleep.

I will just add that it does take time for ducks to adjust to the rehoming. I had a pair that I adopted together, those two were crazy loud in the mornings, and I could not set them out to pasture, if I did, they would take off South, honking like mad and running for their old home. I'd say at least 2 weeks for a duck to acclimate to new home, and that refers to livestock, not pets.

I wonder if OP could try a dog crate, wrap it up tightly with a blanket overnight, perhaps that would help with the early morning honking? As the Duck's behavior has been described, I can imagine it doing the therapy visits like the Therapy Dogs.

Fwiw, my ducks have had no interest imprinting. Ever. They call to me when they hear me out in the yard, but IMO a human would really have to make great efforts to humanize a duck like that. And it really just isn't fair to the duck to not go the duration of their lifetime. How are things working out now?

I thought i had reposted in here. I know i posted about Charlie, but must have somewhere else.

Charlie was rehomed with a lady who has kids and another duck. They live on 5acres and have a dam.
Her other duck also wakes her at her back door at 4.30 but she is up then anyway.

So all in all things turned out good.

I have enjoyed reading everyone's (i read them all) experiences and opinions in here
