Big Island Hawaii - Planning to raise chickens for both eggs and meat... any tips for a newbie?

I have a little experience on the big island... I have property in Puna district, near where you are talking about. You can raise chickens, but not rabbits. The things you should be very careful of are the natives.... not the law. There is an enormous movement to keep Hawaii native. The island is absolutely plagued with pine trees now. You can raise chickens easily enough.... but if you plan on bringing pear or apple or other fruit trees, I guarantee you that you will run into trouble... serious trouble. Ask your neighbors if you already live there... Since there are no such things as county governments, you might also check with your state agricultural extension agency. Good luck.. I know what you want. Many people want a simple life such as you describe. The only thing you should be concerned about is bringing your part of the mainland with you to the islands... The people there are friendly, but if you want to convert your island land to mainland... don't get your hopes up.

Aloha! Welcome to BYC! We lived on the big island (Puna district) and raised both chickens (lots of different breeds) and Netherland Dwarf Rabbits. We sold eggs, chicks, and bunnies, but that was over 20 years ago and I'm sure that things (including regulations) have changed a lot since then. Good luck in pursuing your dream.

I can't help myself but chuckle at the pp. no county government? Catch flack for apple and pear trees? Beware of the natives?? You clearly have what you say you have-LITTLE experience here.
