I know there are multiple Brahma threads out there but I want to start this one to help those who may sometimes feel threatened by the feedback they hear from those who know "poultry perfection"


BACKYARD BRAHMAS!!
This thread is for people who have Brahmas that are nothing special but are close to their hearts.
If you have no idea or don't care about tail angle, vulture hocks or broad heads.....then this is the place for you!

I would like to say that I have no problem with those who are very interested in the world of poultry shows or that enjoy further developing a breed. However, when two groups that have such different goals meet it tends to lend it self to hard feelings and heated discussions.

SO.....Post pics of your gentle giants hatchery or not, ask questions, and enjoy being the owner of backyard Brahmas!

Are Banty Brahma owners welcome? I have one beautiful little buff gal who I consider one of my two prettiest birds. I love her, bought her from a show a year ago. She is so mellow and sweet natured! She shares her coop with a banty Cochin (prettiest girl #2) and a Silkie cockerel. I am thinking of having a straight up 'yard candy' flock someday. Just pretty bantams loose on the front lawn... *daydreamy smile*
 
I have a couple of bantam brahma girls and a large fowl gal, too. The little ones (Li'l Bit and her daughter Monica) are so sweet! Brenda the LF Brahma is a pushy, LOUD gal, while Beatrice the LF Dark Brahma is much less noisy. All have been broody at least once...

I had a light brahma I got from a hatchery, my Most Desired Chick in the group. And of course, 'she' ended up with tree trunk legs, a vertical stance and a love of twirling around dancing. I can't have boys so I found him a new home with a flock of ladies outside city limits. Still would love to have a LF brahma but I will have to wait for room in the coop. Maybe I can hatch some myself later this year. I just have to find a local breeder willing to part with some eggs.
 
I am curious what people's experience is with egg size. Mine will be starting their first full fledged year of laying this spring. I have heard many reports of jumbo Brahma eggs and was just curious if any one has had that experience. Mine were about a medium through the fall but are now close to a large store egg (sorry no scale). If there are pics that would be good too. Thanks!!
 
Cute....looks like you have a buff and a light??

Not really anything major.... they are pretty low maintanence birds. A 4 foot fence contains them with no problem and although I have heard many people say they are pigs and eat too much mine free range and eat very little. However, they do eat quite a bit when penned in all day. I love mine and they are great as i haven't tamed mine at all and when I do catch them they stay calm and never peck. Good Luck!!
