Raising and training a Livestock Guardian dog

Contact the Komondor clubs. There are two that I know of. There is the Komondor Club of America and the other that I can't remember the name of. You ought to be able to find them on line. I used to belong to both. Anyway, they ought to be able to steer you toward some books and other rescources on training livestock guards. The second club, the one I can't remember has, or at least used to have, an excellent newsletter.

I realize this is an old thread, but I KNOW there are many of you out there with LGDs. I just got, not one, but TWO Great Pyrenees puppies. They are both males. One is 11 weeks old (what a TEDDY BEAR!!) and the other is 5 months old. I consider both to be "rescues." They are "farm dogs." Big Boy, who I'll call Badger, was raised with goats and kept in the goat barn. However, at my house, with MY goats, he cries and barks to be let out into the rest of the yard. My ND goats are scared of him, so without a herd of his own, big boy wants to be in the house with our other dogs and the puppy.

The 11 week old puppy is not housebroken, so when inside, we keep him in a small pen that he quickly learned to scale(!!). We'll have to think of something else, like the crate for evenings. The problem is, he pees on anything and then lays in it. We're working on that.

The reason I got the baby was because I have a hawk issue and my chickens can't free range anymore until I have a dog who is old enough and trained to protect them. My thought was that the dog would be outside with the chickens all day long, and then come inside at night, since our coops are pretty secure and haven't had any issues (yet) with evening predators. We live in a pretty suburban area.

We want our dogs to be social, which can be a no no depending on who you talk to. It's ok if our dogs bond to us AND understand that the chickens and/or goats are part of the territory they are there to protect. Is that possible? Can my "family pet by night" be a good LGD by day??

Thanks in advance!
