8x8 chicken coop

I have a 8x8 chicken Coop with a 9x18 run.I have 5 hens and a rooster ,I'm not sure how many it will comfortably hold.Im thinking of ordering some in febuary. Just wanted some opinions .

I have a 4x6 cool with a 7x7 run, and mine will comfortabley hold six, but can have eight. I predict that your coop can hold 10-12 chickens comfortably, or 20 at the max.

I wouldn't add numerous levels, only because it will be hard to clean. Also, you probably wouldn't have enough room, as you would with the full coop.

I have a 8 X 8 coop (converted from a shed) with an 8 X 14 hoop run and I am very happy with it. I currently have five hens and two roosters. Keeping the roosters over the winter for warmth and will cull them in the spring and get five started pullets. Having worked with the coop since last summer, I have decided not to keep more than ten chickens. Could squeeze in a couple more but any more than that would be tight. I put a roost and poop board along the left side wall and a portion of the back wall (like an "L") and I have three nest boxes on the balance of the back wall (lower than the roost). I hang the feeder under the poop board and have a dusting box under the poop board as well. On the right side wall there is a window, the waterer and pans for grit and oyster shell. Plenty of floor space; I can walk around the coop to do chores comfortably without getting in the way of the flock. The only improvement I'm considering in the summer is to make the nest boxes external. That would give even more floor space.

20 would about be the max for the run pending on breed.

I have nine in a four by eight coop and it's too small. I feel that you could house ten in an eight by eight building comfortablly. I plan on doubling the floor space as soon as the snow melts but for now they'll have to make do. I open the pop door each day so they can get out into the covered run (it's ten by ten). I also plan to add a poop board under the roost once we expand, and using either sand or Sweet PDZ on the board to catch most of the waste. Should make cleanups alot easier!

How tall is your 4X8? I have 15 in mine(8X8)now and there is more than ample room and even room for more.

For optimum health and comfort of the birds I'd go with around 10. Sure you can squeeze in more but the more crowded your birds are the more you risk pecking issues and other problems. I'm quite frankly always a little surprised at the numbers I sometimes see suggested.

10 would be the number if they stayed in the coop all day. Which the OPs won't be. The average 2/3 sq.ft. per bird in the coop and 10 sq. ft. in the run. So 8X8 is 64 sq. So 20 would be a doable number provided they had 200 sq. of run space. Again it depends on which breeds. I have had 19 hens and a roo(standard breeds) in mine with no pecking problems at all other than the jostling for roost position. But to each is own. I know for a fact my girls are happy and healthy and the proof is in the nest box.
