I have nine in a four by eight coop and it's too small. I feel that you could house ten in an eight by eight building comfortablly. I plan on doubling the floor space as soon as the snow melts but for now they'll have to make do. I open the pop door each day so they can get out into the covered run (it's ten by ten). I also plan to add a poop board under the roost once we expand, and using either sand or Sweet PDZ on the board to catch most of the waste. Should make cleanups alot easier!
For optimum health and comfort of the birds I'd go with around 10. Sure you can squeeze in more but the more crowded your birds are the more you risk pecking issues and other problems. I'm quite frankly always a little surprised at the numbers I sometimes see suggested.I have a 8x8 chicken Coop with a 9x18 run.I have 5 hens and a rooster ,I'm not sure how many it will comfortably hold.Im thinking of ordering some in febuary.
