Need Help; found baby pigeon and am not sure what I should be doing...

I have rehabbed several types of wild birds, and this is a good basic formula for the young ones that fall out, or get blown out of their nests, or that are orphans. Older wild birds need Game Feed, or Wild Bird Feed when they are old enough, or well enough to eat it. Do not feed them Chicken Feed, as several types of birds can't tolerate some of the ingredients.
1 Can Dog Food
1 Multi Vitamin (dissolved)
4 Tums (most birds like fruit flavored best)
1 Can Green Beans
1 Baked Sweet Potato (cooled and peeled)
Water (enough to make it a bit thinner than baby food)
Good to know. Thanks!

Hmmm... might have to trap some then.

Why don't farmers like them?
They eat food, make babies, poop, ya know, most reason people hate em. I think their pretty!

I found this baby fan tailed pigeon on the ground and was bleeding. Thinking the new mom isn't tending to baby well enough and the other pigeons were picking on it. I cleaned wounds and put Blu-Kote on them as I do for my chicks and chickens. I need to find out what should I feed it, how much, how often, how much water how often (warm or cool water) how warm do I need to keep it? I am in the country and the stores are closing right now so need something that's in a home or the chick-grower feed, layer pellets, hen scratch, whole oats or whole milo is what feeds I have on hand right now. I have never had a problem with the parents raising the babies and protecting them. So I just want to find out everything ASAP so this 1 has a chance. Right now it's in the house under heat lamp or in a sugar glider pouch to keep it warm. Not sure how old it is but it's at least several days old, eyes wide open.

Ok, here is what you need to know. This bird is probably about 4-5 days old I would suppose, seeing that the eyes are open and it is still small. The bird I have right now is about just as old. Here is what we have been doing for our bird:

Food: Kaytee Exact Feeding Formula for baby's birds (feed him about 5ml of a solution of 1tsp of powder to 2-3tsp of moderately warm water three times a day. Gradually increase the consistency of this soulution to about the consistency of ketchup after the squab is 5 days old).
Heat: use a 40w lightbulb red heating lamp or you can use a heating pad set to low with a thin blanket set on top of it. The bird needs to be kept at about 90 degrees Fahrenheit until it is two weeks old.
Feeding: get a 10ml medical syringe and cut off the end at the 1ml line completely. Then to feed the bird, bring the syringe plug back to the 5ml mark and fill it with the mixed solution. Next, grab a rubber balloon or a laytex glove and cut it in half completely so that you have a thin rubber surface. Then, place that over the open end of the syringe, making sure the ends of the rubber surface of the balloon are around the outside of the syringe and take a rubber band and wrap it around the ballon four or five times. Then take scissors and cut a slit about as wide as a fingernail in the top of the opening. Finally, hold the bed in your hand with a paper towel and guide the bird's beak into the opening and it should eat on its own (that is if the bird is squeaking. I doubt it isn't, considering how old it looks to be). Do this 3 times a day. Make sure to let the crop (the underside portion that will look like a balloon after you feed it on the breast area) empty completely (go flat) once every 24 hours as not doing so will build bacteria inside of it and produce sour crop. Also, always make fresh food. If you make it prior to feeding the bird in large batches, it will go sour.
Enclosure: get an empty 1 gallon plastic circular water jug and cut the bottom off just an inch or so under the halfway mark of the jug. Then fold a rag or kitchen towel twice. Finally, place it itnside the cut off bottom end of the jug and make sure the towel is touching the sides.

I pray to Jesus this helps out! There are many websites that are able to help out with this stuff too, however you have to look around for them. This is not a set standard, but it's what I've been doing. We found our bird about 4 days ago and it must have just hatched when we did. Anyhow, I will post pictures too so you get an idea of what it looks like.

"All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us" (2 Corinthians 1:3-4, NLT). .

I have hand reared many pigeons and doves. Here is the method I find the most easy!

Get your chick starter crumbs (or parrot baby food) and mix into a thick-ish paste. Should be like thick custard. Make sure this is warm to the touch - but NOT HOT.

Get a small clear plastic bag and cut a small hole in one corner - just big enough for the birds to get its beak into and open its beak (not too big or the mixture will all come out over the pigeons head).

Pour in the mixture. Hold the bag level with the birds head and gently push it onto its beak. The pigeon will soon learn to push its head back and forward and swallow the mixture.

Keep the bird in a box and change the bedding every day as they poop a lot!

You only need to feed him about 3 times a day - as much as he will eat each time. After about one week he will only need feeding 2 times a day. I feed in the morning and late afternoon.

IMPORTANT Do NOT FEED is he still has some food left in his crop from the feeding before. All the food must be out before you 'top him up' otherwise the old food will go bad in there and make him sick.

At the age of your bird you can start adding some small seeds to the mix and a very small amount of grit (but this is not essential - I find it helps with them starting to feed themselves later).

If you have any questions please ask! I LOVE PIGEONS!!!!! When he grows up you will have a super friendly pet there.
