I want to start of this thread by saying it isn't meant to insult anyone. It is not the average serama enthusiast's fault they were led to believe we imported Champion Serama into the U.S. when the birds were truly Kapans (a small import of real serama did occur). Please don't feel insulted as we discuss this topic, you can still love your birds. However, to eventually sort out our flocks and get on the best possible track, the discussion should take place.

I suggest reading some of his Serama vs Kapan articles. This person has been to the countries of origin and seen the imported birds, something most people do not get to do. This will shed some light on the subject for those who did not know.

One question I have is, how many people wish they had real serama vs these kapans we have now? I know a lot of misinformation has been spread by a main group promoting these "serama", such as the genetics in the background not mattering, but this is just not correct, may be a way to keep selling Kapan as Serama.
The idea of serama "being extreme" is also a fib. You could make them as extreme or not as extreme as you liked. You would just be starting with the real mmcoy, not a fake facsimile.

If real serama were imported, would people want them?

Folks, we have asked the OP to open this thread for discussion; this thread is not meant to insult anyone or raise hackles.

Please do not join the thread unless you are open to discussion on this topic.

Please do not troll or flame anyone; and REPORT IT rather than replying if you see a post that breaks the rules.

There are plenty of points of view on the subject. No one should feel insulted by that. It is meant to better what we have for genetics in the U.S. More serama, true serama, are likely to make their way here in the not too distant future. Will they replace, augment, or coexist with current birds? What will happen in crosses? What do the genetics behind a breed truly mean? All good questions that have good answers. Lets stop letting misinformation rule serama breeding and don't be intimidated by those who wish it not to be discussed.

I am trying to bring this away from the other thread, so I will post this here...

On the other thread, the ASA California rep asked me what a kapan was. This is demonstrative of the missing knowledge I am talking about.

For those of us who weren't following another thread, and are clueless, can you give a brief synopsis of the differences between the breeds? Thanks :)

The serama is short bodied, much smaller and has the body much smaller in proportion to the head. The body shape is naturally an "S" curve and the birds display this very upright, head back position without being posed. Temperment of the true serama is very docile, with very much an absense of aggressive individuals.

The kapan is larger, heavier and has a longer back. Posing is how they are made to resemble serama. They are trained.

I am going to repeat this because it is not flaming so should not be censored. Demonstrative of the missing knowledge on seramas are club officials that are unaware of what a kapan was. He asked me what one was in the other thread. This isn't flaming, it is just information that goes to show that even those high up in the clubs could use some additional information on what they are promoting. Look at the major clubs. How many leaders, once they disagreed with ANYTHING, have been rotated out of those organizations. Its HUNDREDS of people.

Moderators, you told me to start this thread. Are you going to allow these problems to be addressed or are we going to just keep deleting them, pretending it is a flame?

where did u find this info seramas and kapan and where are u located. also ive read theres different types of seramas in malaysia like slim, extreme, dragon type, and s shape serama not just one type and people in the us have seramas either as pets or breed them to the standard they are trying to achieve as others breed to their liking

As I have said, I got this information from the exporters, importers, Malaysian breeders, other breeders over seas and some of the best U.S. breeders of serama.

The different types you are talking about was a distortion of the truth used early on by an importer to explain why the imported birds did not resemble serama. The claim was there were several types and these we one of them. The truth is that while EARLY serama had some variation to them and were described using objects like ball and apple, they were NOT kept seperate. A slim serama was just what it was, a serama that was slimmer than they desired in the breed. S curve simply refers to the shape of the back in a proper serama. All of these "different" birds were used to create the final Malaysian serama. I often find it funny that "dragon" got thrown in the mix. Dragon serama was actually a name of a breeder's facility in Malaysia (just as you could be Bird Maniac Farms). Goes to show what distortions were used at the time to explain away the kapan look of... well kapans we imported..
